We are seeking an exceptional Software Engineering Manager with deep experience in software engineering and infrastructure leadership, and a proven track record leading high-performance engineering teams in fast-paced, highly competitive technology environments. You are energised by performance, clarity, and momentum - setting ambitious goals, actively managing performance, and turning strategy into measurable impact at speed. This role is fundamentally purpose-driven. You will help scale a credible, enterprise-grade ethical alternative in a market dominated by surveillance-led platforms, proving that privacy-first, open-source technology can compete - and win - through execution excellence. You must be competitive, and you must want to win. Matomo competes directly with the world's largest technology companies, including Google and Adobe. This role is not for the faint-hearted. It is for leaders who thrive under pressure, enjoy operating in high-expectation environments, and take pride in out-executing far larger competitors through focus, discipline, and product quality.
Reporting to the Head of Product & Engineering, you will lead globally distributed, culturally diverse engineering teams and build an environment where high performance is the norm. You will set clear standards, manage performance directly and fairly, and create strong accountability for delivery, quality, and operational maturity. Speed to impact is critical - success in this role means consistently shortening the distance between idea, execution, and customer value. You will continuously evolve how engineering work gets done. This includes adopting modern delivery practices and tooling - such as AI-assisted development - to increase throughput, improve quality, and amplify the effectiveness of experienced engineers. You will challenge outdated approaches, introduce better ones, and ensure teams adapt quickly without compromising reliability, security, or trust. This is not a role for passive leadership or comfort with the status quo. It is for someone who builds elite teams, competes hard while staying principled, and holds themselves and others to a very high bar.
About Matomo: Matomo is the leading open-source, privacy-first analytics platform, used by over one million websites and apps across 190+ countries. We help organisations get meaningful insights while maintaining full control of their data and meeting global privacy expectations and regulations. We're fully remote, open source, profitable, and growing sustainably - with teams across Europe, North America and New Zealand. We're flexible by design. You can make your own hours and work where you do your best work. We care about outcomes, not time spent online - we want you operating at your best, and we'll support you to build a rhythm that helps you perform at your peak.
What you'll do:
- Lead and scale high-performing engineering teams (14 total Full Stack and QAs Engineers) operating in competitive, delivery-driven environments
- Drive complex, multi-stream initiatives from strategy through execution with clear ownership and outcomes
- Actively manage performance, expectations, and delivery standards across teams
- Strengthen infrastructure scalability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency
- Lead step-wise modernisation of platform, UI, APIs, and developer experience
- Establish strong delivery discipline, operational standards, and accountability
- Embed enterprise-grade security, privacy-by-design, and DevSecOps practices
- Drive adoption of modern engineering practices, including AI-assisted coding, where they materially improve speed and quality
Benefits:
- 100% remote role (must be based in United Kingdom)
- Flexible working hours
- Co-working or home office budget
- Home office equipment provided
- 25 days paid holiday plus public holidays
- Health insurance
- Mental health support services
- Training and development opportunities
- Volunteering day
- Compassionate leave, including for pet loss
