Diabetic eye screening is a test to check for eye problems caused by diabetes. Some people with diabetes develop serious complications with their eyes, called diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to sight loss if untreated. The screening test can find eye problems before sight is affected. Pictures are taken of the back of the eyes to check for any changes.
Main duties of the job:
- Ensure that patients feel welcome and comfortable throughout the screening process.
- Undertake the screening checklist to ensure the environment is safe.
- Perform basic maintenance of the camera and equipment to enable the best possible images.
- Safely administer eye drops to enlarge pupils and take photographs ensuring correct field of view.
- Identify any patients requiring urgent onward referral at the time of their screening appointment.
- Maintain sufficient stock of consumables to run your clinic.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Experience in a caring environment or hospital background is preferable but not necessary.
- Good people‑handling skills and a desire to make a difference.
- Ability to take detailed, close‑up pictures of the eye and remain composed.
- Adaptability and quick‑thinking problem‑solving skills.
- Flexibility in working hours, including occasional evening and weekend work, and a commitment to completing the Health Screener Diploma within the required timescale.
- Full driving licence and access to a car for travel to and from clinics.
