The overall purpose of the Lung Cancer Screening Programme is to enable the early detection of lung cancer to save lives. The Lung Cancer Screening Service has been implemented throughout the UK in areas identified with high disease prevalence where significant impact can be made from the recognition of early-stage lung cancer and offering curative treatment.
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced respiratory nurse to join our established nursing team as the Team Lead for our Lung Cancer Screening Service. This role will be fundamental to the delivery and running of a high quality and effective service which will identify asymptomatic people, providing early diagnosis of both lung cancer and other lung diseases.
You will provide clinical expertise and assist the operations manager in leading the nursing team to organise and deliver services that are joined up and provide seamless care. You will be responsible for the day-to-day running, coordination and delivery of the lung health check service to include line management duties of the nursing team.
You will work closely with the Clinical Lead, HON and our commissioners to provide and ensure the continual professional development and overall performance of the nursing team to ensure that the services we provide to our patients are of the highest possible standard, supporting the nursing team to deliver a Lung Cancer Screening Service both virtually and face to face which is delivered in accordance with the National Standard protocol and framework.
You will play an active role to share your clinical expertise working collaboratively with the clinical team by attending weekly screening review meetings. Where applicable this may include overseeing the timely and accurate management of all nodules and 24 m recall incidental findings. You will have an opportunity to be part of a collaborative team of pioneers delivering and developing pilot programmes nationally with the aim to inform and contribute towards the ultimate creation and delivery of a successful national screening lung cancer programme.
Most of our established current programmes cover a large regional and geographical area so candidates must be prepared and willing to travel to all agreed mobile clinics for their agreed area. Our nursing team provides a 7-day service with bank holiday working included across all programmes. Candidates must be adaptable around mobile working and willing to work 12-hour shift patterns as our standard working pattern. This role offers flexible office working hours as well as undertaking regular patient clinics to provide supervision, cover for sickness and annual leave as required.
What you will do:
- Ensure that the services we provide to our patients are of the highest possible standard through the demonstration of clinical expertise.
- Be a highly visible clinical role model leading by example.
- Assist the operations manager with the day to day running of the nursing service and assist with line management responsibilities as agreed per programme.
- Ensure a competent and confident nursing team by facilitating opportunities for shared learning in the workplace.
- Utilise and share clinical assessment skills and expert knowledge of the pathway from the patient’s perspective to the nursing team to ensure the service provides seamless care and a competent workforce.
- Work collaboratively with the clinical team and represent InHealth attending weekly screening review meetings to ensure the timely and accurate management of nodule surveillance and 24 m incidental findings pathways where applicable.
- Remain abreast of the developments in clinical practice and represent InHealth by attending stakeholder/commissioning and clinical meetings as required to inform and contribute to shared learning and findings to support the continual development and improvement of services.
- Troubleshoot clinical issues experienced in clinic, which have been escalated by the nursing team and escalate all operational issues directly to the operations manager.
- To inform the operations manager of the necessary equipment required and ensure this is maintained to ensure safe and efficiently run clinics.
- Assist the Clinical Lead and HON to put remedial actions in place to assist underperforming areas.
- Assist the HON with the advice needed to reduce and report risks.
- Support the Clinical Lead and HON in the development and delivery of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines and undertake clinical audit in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues across our shared care organisations.
You will have experience of:
- Evidence of ongoing and sustained continuing professional development.

- Working within teams and or external stakeholders from a variety of different backgrounds.
Qualifications/training required:
Essential criteria:
- First level registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years working at a senior level of Band 7 equivalent or minimum of 4 years working at Band 6 equivalent to include respiratory nursing.
- Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
- Recognised teaching and assessing qualification.
- Have proven effective management and leadership skills.
- Have professional and personal credibility.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to organise and prioritise own and others workload.
- Excellent clinical skills working at an advanced level.
- Good audit/reporting skills.
- Have a full clean driving license.
Desirable criteria:
- Spirometry experience and or ARTP accreditation and registration. (Training will be provided).
- IRMER qualification. (Training will be provided).
- Smoking cessation qualification. (Training will be provided).
- Recognised leadership qualification. (Or willingness to work towards).
- Recognised teaching qualification.
- Have in-depth knowledge and understanding of Lung Cancer Screening Service screening programmes.
