Main purpose of the job: The purpose of this role is to conduct research and development activities focused on identifying, assessing, and improving microbial strains for agricultural applications, particularly those used in silage additives to enhance farm productivity and feed preservation. Working closely with the commercial team, the successful candidate will lead investigations, source and develop new bacterial strains, improve existing strains, organise product trials, analyse results, and support ongoing product development. The role will also involve providing technical support across the Microferm business unit to ensure continuous innovation and product effectiveness.

Key functions & responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and development across the business units.
  • In conjunction with the Technical Manager, develop research programmes to source new commercial strains and review current strains to improve existing products.
  • Write, implement, and review research procedures and plans. Report on the effectiveness and suitability of strains discovered and traits of existing strains using both in-house and external trial work.
  • In conjunction with the Technical Manager, develop in-house expertise to register strains of bacteria for required sales territories – UK/EU/US and others to follow.
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of regulatory documentation.
  • Assist with the maintenance of regulatory files and databases to ensure prompt and accurate access to company regulatory information (concerning current, pending and future approvals and renewals).
  • Product development and technical support of all Microferm and Bio-Systems Europe products.
  • Provide technical support to the manufacturing operations, including basic formulation work, raw material approval, quality assurance & quality control of products produced.
  • To carry out research to develop products, production techniques and procedures and then record the methodology.
  • Assure lab equipment is properly calibrated/maintained.
  • To ensure there is a high level of cleanliness maintained within laboratory.
  • Purchase laboratory consumables and purchase replacement and small items of equipment.
  • As a member of the technical team, attend regular meetings, present findings, and follow up on actions assigned.
  • Ensure effective communication between laboratory and all other sectors of the business.
  • Provides back up for Technical Manager, as required.

  • To perform any other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications & Training:

  • Qualified to a minimum of BSc level preferably PhD level in an applied Biology subject.
  • Strong microbiology skills, including knowledge of bioinformatics and computational biology, familiarity with various microbial culture techniques.
  • Research skills in microbiology with working knowledge of lactic acid bacteria specifically would be advantageous.
  • Experience of translating technical microbiology research outcomes into practical, commercially viable agricultural applications.
  • The ability to understand technical issues – equipment and their uses.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to analyse and interpret scientific data using bespoke statistical software and other Microsoft packages.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
  • Good communication & presentation skills across all levels of the business.
  • Familiarity with current EU and UK agricultural regulations relevant to silage inoculants and additives would be beneficial.
