The Role

The Senior Engineer sits within the wider delivery team and reports to the Solutions Architect.

Day to day, you’ll provide technical analysis, design and hands‑on development for Ingentive and our clients.

On most projects you’ll be the most senior technical person involved on a day‑to‑day basis, and people will look to you to lead on delivery of the technical solution.

Objectives and Responsibilities

You’ll work across the areas below, with guidance from an Innovation Architect and in line with Ingentive’s delivery standards. The mix will vary by engagement:

  • Serverless and workflow components built with Azure Function apps, Logic Apps and Azure Data Tables.
  • Data technologies including SQL Server and Postgre SQL, with Microsoft Fabric and Power BI for reporting and analytics.
  • Integration patterns for connecting to third‑party tools, Dynamics 365 and the wider Power Platform.
  • Using AI technologies to sharpen and speed up how we develop.
  • Role‑Specific Responsibilities
  • Providing clear and consistent communication on project risks, assumptions and dependencies, both during pre‑sales and project delivery.
  • Providing developers with successful mentorship through code reviews and peer reviews of development.
  • Ensuring issues are logged and responded to within SLAs and providing client support cover as required through the team rota.
  • Communicating updates to project managers and team leads regularly, clearly and promptly.
  • Managing your delivery tickets in Ingentive’s project management systems and tracking your time accurately.
  • Taking clear ownership of assigned development tasks, ensuring consistently high‑quality deliverables.
  • Being proactive in identifying and resolving issues, so that you are viewed as a trusted advisor to the client in a technical capacity.
  • Organising and prioritising your own workload appropriately, reporting risks and exceptions to the relevant manager, and ensuring you deliver what you agree to deliver against scheduled work.
  • Focusing on quality, including engaging early with Test, Code Review, Unit Testing, Integration Testing, and other agreed processes to ensure first‑time, high‑quality deliverables into Test.
  • Working and collaborating with clients and the Ingentive team to share knowledge and deliver consistent, cohesive solutions.
  • Supporting best practice at Ingentive, including conformance to and continuous improvement of relevant Quality Management System (QMS) processes and templates.
  • Providing realistic estimates of effort for tasks, and reviewing estimates prepared by others to validate the technical solution proposed, estimated effort, approach and risks.
  • Proactively identifying and highlighting opportunities within existing clients where Ingentive’s services could be offered, and alerting the account manager.
  • Technical Leadership & Seniority Expectations
  • Owning the technical delivery of the project, not just the tickets with your name on them.
  • Setting the technical standard and leading by example, so the rest of the team delivers to Ingentive’s standards and processes.
  • Breaking down and estimating user stories and technical tasks during quotation and planning, building in enough tolerance to set the team up to succeed.
  • Picking up issues raised by clients or project managers and working out a way forward.
  • Keeping an eye on how the team is working, making sure best practice holds and that work is covered when someone’s on leave.
  • Setting realistic delivery expectations with project managers and clients, and flagging delivery queries early rather than late.
  • Staying on top of the project budget (in hours) and the milestones ahead and pushing back when a deadline isn’t realistic for the team.
  • Being someone the team looks to for better ways of working, whether that’s improving how we deliver or finding something that delights the client.
  • Spotting and demonstrating tools and approaches that make the wider team better.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Exceptional development skills in a delivery environment, with a focus on quality and attention to detail in all areas.
  • An excellent understanding of cloud services and how to leverage the cloud in the design and development of software.

You will hold an advanced Azure certification in one of Ingentive’s service areas.

  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality software on multiple projects within time and budget.
  • Proactive ownership of all technical tasks assigned, and the ability to deliver solutions that meet customer business requirements.
  • Outstanding organisation and time‑management skills, with the ability to switch tasks easily.

You will set an example of excellent time tracking with accurate timers and time entries for the development team.

  • Experience delivering unit testing against coverage targets and identifying core business logic that should be covered by unit tests.
  • Technical analysis experience and the ability to capture requirements accurately.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, including presentations, and the ability to present a technical subject to a non‑technical audience.
  • A collaborative, positive and proactive attitude.
  • Experience of UX and UI design concepts and development against these.
  • Experience of working within Agile and Waterfall project frameworks, concepts and methodologies.
  • Development experience in web applications, mobile applications, and related communication technologies and protocols.
  • Development experience in cloud services such as Azure Cognitive.
  • Experience and certifications in other related areas, including Database, Architecture, Integration Services, and Mobile, Data and Cloud development.
  • Understanding of enterprise software architecture design, functional and non‑functional specification, wireframe, and mock‑up tools.
  • Up‑to‑date Microsoft certifications applicable to Ingentive’s core services, or the willingness and desire to achieve them within 12 months of joining the company.

How to prepare for a job interview at Ingentive

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Ingentive uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
