If you’re excited by engineering excellence, high-performance systems, and the chance to influence how one of Romania’s most-used digital banking apps evolves, this role is for you.

You’ll join a mature squad with a strong engineering culture, operating in a fast-paced environment where curiosity, ownership and high-quality delivery are the norm. Cross-functional collaboration is embedded in how the team works — engineers, product managers, designers and platform specialists co-create meaningful digital banking experiences every day.

As a Chapter Lead Java, you’ll combine people leadership with technical leadership, guiding a community of Java engineers while remaining hands-on in driving standards for performance, scalability, and engineering best practices. You’ll be instrumental in shaping the future of ING’s Home’Bank application — a platform with over 30 million logins every month.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and grow a team of Java engineers, supporting their development, skills expansion, and engineering quality;
  • Promote and teach strong Java engineering practices, ensuring alignment with ING Group standards;
  • Design, develop, and maintain highly performant, reliable and scalable code for complex backend scenarios;
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams — product, design, marketing, support and platform — to continuously improve the customer experience;
  • Engineer and challenge product and technical specifications, ensuring maintainability, test coverage, resilience, and adherence to industry standards;
  • Analyze trade-offs and document technical decisions related to Java engineering practices.

What you bring to the team:

  • 10+ years of professional development experience and a portfolio of shipped applications;
  • Advanced Java programming experience (7+ years);
  • Proficiency with J2EE/JEE stack (JMS, JAX-WS, JAX-RS, EJB), Spring Core, Spring Boot, Hibernate, Microservices;
  • Strong understanding of REST and SOAP services;
  • Experience with Docker/Kubernetes and message brokers (preferably Kafka);
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills;
  • Passion for coaching and developing engineering talent, acting as a role model for the chapter;
  • Agile & Continuous Delivery mindset with attention to quality and detail;
  • Adaptability and strong problem-solving skills, especially in complex technical environments.

What we offer:

  • Impactful work in a fun, inclusive and highly collaborative environment;
  • Modern, open office spaces built for teamwork and creative work;
  • Hybrid working model with flexibility baked in;
  • Monthly benefit budget you can use your way;
  • Extra paid vacation days based on total work experience;
  • Continuous learning opportunities through ING Learning Centre, Udemy, Bookster, trainings and certifications;
  • Internal mobility across ING worldwide, including short- and long-term international assignments;
  • Opportunities to contribute to sustainability and CSR initiatives.
