Location: Hybrid – Wilmslow office (relocating to Manchester city centre on 28 September 2026). Office will be at Circle Square, Manchester.

Job Summary

The Senior Case Officer assists with the timely and thorough review of international transfer instruments and liaises with BCR applicants and stakeholders regarding the application and compliance of organisations with international transfer instruments, especially Binding Corporate Rules (BCR).

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the review of BCR applications to determine whether they meet the necessary requirements set out in UK legislation and ICO guidance.
  • Draft written comments for applicant organisations following an assessment of a BCR application against specified criteria.
  • Review and provide comments or advice in relation to questions or issues concerning the application and use of BCR and other international transfer instruments.
  • Correspond with organisations and their representatives and prepare necessary correspondence and approval documentation following the completion of UK approval processes.
  • Deliver UK BCR reviews and associated outcomes in accordance with agreed timescales and processes.
  • Ensure that applicants and stakeholders are kept up to date with the progress of any application or matter.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings with internal and external stakeholders concerning international transfer mechanisms.
  • Update internal tracking documents, ICO templates, precedents, procedures, and knowledge base relating to international transfers.
  • Review substantive changes to approved BCR applications to assess impact on validity.
  • Liaise with cross‑departmental colleagues on review, application, and ongoing compliance with BCRs and other tools.
  • Provide advice to decision makers regarding solutions, options, and issues needed to ensure compliance, particularly when complex or novel issues arise.
  • Assist with preparation of input for briefs for ICO attendees at external meetings and conferences.
  • Represent the ICO at speaking events to promote policy on international transfers.

Person Specification – Essential Criteria (Application)

  • Substantial experience working in data protection or a regulatory environment, or drafting/reviewing legal documentation.
  • Experience successfully liaising with senior staff in external organisations and representing your organisation.
  • Experience working with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent intellectual and analytical ability, with knowledge of data protection law and ability to rapidly develop expertise in international transfers.
