The Senior Vice President (SVP) of Product Marketing and Communications is a critical leadership role within the Go-To-Market (GTM) team, responsible for driving the strategic planning, execution, and optimization of marketing and communication initiatives that support the successful commercialization of academic publishing products and services. This role is pivotal in ensuring the organization's academic publishing portfolio achieves its revenue, market share, and customer engagement goals through impactful go-to-market strategies and effective customer activation.
A key focus is ensuring that customer audiences, academic institutions, researchers, librarians, and other stakeholders are effectively engaged, activated, and ready for monetization. The SVP will lead cross-functional collaboration across product development, sales, customer success, and marketing teams to ensure seamless execution of GTM plans. This role requires deep understanding of the academic publishing landscape, customer personas, and market dynamics, combined with expertise in product positioning, messaging, and demand generation, while leveraging data-driven insights and emerging trends to maintain the organization's competitive edge.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead comprehensive GTM marketing strategies for academic publishing products, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Define target markets, customer segments, and value propositions for new and existing products.
- Collaborate with product management to effectively communicate product features and benefits to target audiences.
- Own the end-to-end customer activation journey, engaging academic institutions, researchers, librarians, and consortia.
- Develop strategies to build awareness, interest, and demand that drive adoption and maximize revenue potential.
- Partner with customer success teams to ensure seamless onboarding and long-term retention.
- Leverage data analytics to identify high-value segments and continuously refine monetization strategies.
- Design and execute multi-channel marketing campaigns (SEO, SEM, email, social media, content marketing) to drive product awareness and adoption.
- Monitor campaign performance and optimize strategies using data-driven insights.
- Conduct market research to understand customer needs, industry trends, and competitive dynamics.
- Develop competitive intelligence reports to identify opportunities and inform product development and GTM plans.
- Serve as key member of Commercial Senior Leadership Team (SLT), providing strategic input to achieve revenue targets.
- Align marketing strategies with broader business objectives across sales, content, and operations.
- Deliver actionable insights based on market trends, customer feedback, and campaign performance.
- Create high-value thought leadership content (white papers, research reports, case studies) addressing key industry challenges.
- Represent the organization at industry conferences and events.
- Build relationships with media, influencers, and stakeholders to amplify the organization's voice.
- Manage reputation proactively and promote customer success stories.
- Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing GTM marketing and communications team.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
- Establish KPIs to measure GTM strategy and campaign success.
- Analyse performance data and provide regular reports with actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
Qualifications
- Deep and considerable experience in product marketing and communications, with extensive experience in a senior leadership position in a global organisation.
- Demonstrated commercial acumen, able to tap into business strategy when decision making with a revenue and margin focused mindset.
- Combines strong strategic thinking with the ability to plan for the mid to long term and deliver against objectives.
- Proven ability to understand diverse customer groups, develop targeted value propositions, and tailor marketing approaches to maximize acquisition, retention, and expansion across different segments and geographies.
- Demonstrates a high level of credibility and influence, effectively representing the business in discussions with stakeholders at all levels, including C-suite executives and external partners.
- Practical and hands-on experience with customers to provide valuable insight to inform marketing strategy.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and drive change with stakeholders at all levels of the business.
- Exceptional leadership skills, demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate, and develop high-performing teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
- Proven ability to select, implement, and drive adoption of revenue technology stacks (CRM, BI, sales enablement, marketing automation) while establishing standardized processes that bring consistency and efficiency across all revenue operations.
- Numerate combined with a high attention to detail, able to interpret and understand project plans, budgets, and financial targets.

- Location: The successful candidate will be able to utilise our balanced working model. We ask that UK based candidates live within a commutable distance of our UK offices in either Milton Park, Oxfordshire, or London Blackfriars to ensure that as a balanced worker they can make it to our office location to collaborate as required.
