The Opportunity
We are seeking a Media Manager to lead and strengthen our media engagement, support strategy and promotion, and take ownership of day‑to‑day external media activity. This role will play an important part in expanding InfluenceMap’s reach, growing our network of media contacts and partners across regions, and ensuring our work is communicated effectively to audiences in different markets. The role is also suited to someone with a global outlook who can help shape regionally relevant media approaches, understand how language and arguments land in different contexts, and translate technical climate, policy, and corporate accountability research into clear, punchy, and compelling narratives. It is ideal for someone ready to take ownership, show initiative, and grow in the role, including candidates who may be earlier in their media careers but have strong judgment, energy, and potential. You will work closely with our content and engagement teams and our Communications Manager, and report to the Managing Director. Direct experience in our core subject areas — climate change, finance, and business — is useful but not essential. However, a strong interest in these issues and a genuine commitment to InfluenceMap’s mission and the role of media in advancing climate accountability are essential. Full training will be provided by our best‑in‑class team of analysts and managers to help you understand our work and shape effective media messaging and engagement.
What you will do
In this role, you will help drive the visibility, reach, and impact of InfluenceMap’s work through proactive and well‑executed media engagement across regions. Key responsibilities are likely to include:
- Lead and deliver InfluenceMap’s media strategy, while taking ownership of proactive promotion and day‑to‑day media engagement across relevant regions and outlets.
- Build, manage, and deepen relationships with business, financial, mainstream, and other relevant media contacts in order to expand the reach and impact of our work globally.
- Create strong media narratives from technical policy and research content, turning complex findings into clear, persuasive, and newsworthy messaging for external audiences.
- Develop and support a range of media outputs, including press releases, pitches, op‑eds, media briefings, and related communications materials.
- Ensure consistent tone, style, and language across media‑facing content and communications outputs.
- Maintain and make full use of communications systems and software tools, including MS Office, Google Suite, Salesforce, and Mailchimp, to support efficient communications workflows.
- Help lead our social media strategy to build an audience, strengthen visibility, and support broader communications objectives in a way that is aligned with our house style.
- Work in close collaboration with internal content, engagement, and digital communications colleagues to coordinate timely and effective external communications.
To be successful in this role at InfluenceMap, you should have
- At least 3 years of demonstrable experience in PR, media relations, communications, journalism, or a closely related field.
- Experience working in a fast‑paced, high‑volume media or communications environment, with strong news judgment and the ability to identify timely opportunities, make good decisions, and respond confidently to a busy media cycle.
- Ideally, experience in a comparable in‑house role at a respected mission‑driven organization, think tank, advocacy organization, newsroom‑facing communications team, or similar environment where complex issues must be turned into compelling stories for external audiences.
- Strong candidates may also have experience inside a media organization in an editorial, producing, commissioning, or story‑development role, particularly one involving identifying, shaping, pitching, or placing stories.
- Proven ability to build relationships with a range of business, financial, and mainstream media outlets.
- Fluency in English, with excellent writing skills and a keen eye for detail.
- Strong digital and software skills, with experience using common tools such as MS Office, Google Suite, Salesforce, and Mailchimp.
- A proactive, collaborative approach, with the confidence to take ownership of work while continuing to learn and develop in the role.
- Right to work in the UK.
