Are you a Senior Mechatronics Engineer who has strong problem‑solving skills for developing complex instrumentation across a range of technologies, including communications, networking, optics, electro‑mechanics, control algorithms, motion control systems, precision mechanics, embedded software and vacuum systems.

About the role
The role itself will be focused on various control systems, which may include but are not limited to motion control systems, tuning, Piezo control, anti‑vibration systems, etc. A typical day for a Senior Mechatronics Engineer could look like this:
- Driving development work to strengthen existing control systems while helping create new, forward‑thinking solutions
- Applying control theory to shape system and subsystem requirements
- Actively assessing and uplifting system performance
- Supporting ultra‑precise nanometre‑level movements with accuracy under pressure
- Handling sub‑nanometre noise challenges with a solutions‑focused mindset
- Partnering closely with stakeholders to spot issues early and guide them toward effective resolutions
- Creating and maintaining documentation to keep teams informed
- Leading as a subject‑matter expert, offering guidance and technical insight
- Leading technical development work and approaching failure analysis
- Planning technical activities and getting hands‑on with equipment to prove and validate the performance of your designs
- Feeding forward insights, learning and improvements into future developments
- Presenting and documenting clear and engaging technical work
Who we are looking for
To succeed as a Senior Mechatronics Engineer, we need you to have experience of:
- Developing and fine‑tuning precision motion control systems, ideally at the nanometre scale
- Hands‑on engineering development, with a collaborative approach
- Leading on Mechatronic Control Systems and guiding others with clarity
- Feedback and Feedforward loops, with a thoughtful approach to problem‑solving
- Effective application of PID processes
- Working with Bode plots, Pole‑Zero plots, system transfer functions and stability criteria, considering both time and frequency domain performance
- Using programming languages such as LabVIEW, Python or MATLAB; FPGA (VHDL) knowledge is a lovely bonus
- Experience designing tests and setting pass/fail criteria across electrical/electronic and mechanical disciplines
- Ability to manage your own projects with care — including time planning, resource coordination and clear, supportive updates to key stakeholders
Nice to have
- Knowledge of digital filtering (ideally in FPGAs)
- Experience of driving piezos, and knowledge of hysteresis in piezos
- Knowledge of metrology and measurement systems
Education / Qualifications
Either a BSc/BEng in Physics, Engineering or similar, or a clear equivalent path through relevant apprenticeship or accumulated experience.
