INEOS is a global manufacturer of petrochemicals, specialty chemicals and oil products with an overall turnover of about $55 billion and 25,000 employees. INEOS operates a large set of production units on 148 sites in 26 countries.
As one of the INEOS Business Units, INEOS Trading and Shipping (IT&S) is responsible for the supply of gas and liquid feedstocks to the INEOS assets as well as third party storage, shipping and trading of those feedstocks. The trading activity includes the procurement, transportation and sale through complex supply chains involving pipelines, terminals, ships, barges and rail. This equates to thousands of bulk transportations per annum across our global supply chains.
WHY JOIN US?
IT&S has a strong ambition to grow its trading portfolio substantially over the coming years. The current mandate focuses on trading around assets and contracts in Europe, the US and China as well as proprietary paper and physical trading books. The Quantitative Researcher role is an opportunity to join the front office of INEOS Trading & Shipping at an exciting point in its growth. You'll join a lean and agile team where you'll have genuine ownership rather than simply maintaining established models and systems. You'll help shape how we use data, quantitative research and automation across Trading & Shipping, with the opportunity to build tools and analytical capability from the ground up.
ABOUT OUR OPPORTUNITY
The physical market is our core business, where we trade Ethane, Naphtha and LPG. We also require a strong view on Crude, Natural Gas, Oil Products and Freight. A key part of the role will be developing a deep understanding of Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs), the full refining barrel, and global shipping balances and trends, translating this insight into actionable trading opportunities.
- Build and manage a suite of fundamental and quantitative models to support Traders whilst creating PnL value via trading strategies to inform the longer-term strategic direction across IT&S.
- Provide analysis and insight to IT&S teams to inform commercial decision-making.
- Deliver regular market intelligence updates to IT&S teams and management, to ensure they are kept updated and have support for commercial decisions.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
- Build and manage the IT&S data lake, organising complex and unstructured data to enable quantitative research across our Trading and Shipping activities.
- Develop robust data pipelines and quantitative models, turning complex datasets into advanced analytics and actionable trading insight.
- Create and own dashboards that clearly visualise data, model outputs and market trends, alongside more complex models focused on driving trading value.
- Lead the automation of existing and new processes as well as updating our systems to allow more time for creative trading and shipping analysis.
- Provide analysis and strategic insight for critical commercial negotiations and decision-making across Trading and Shipping teams.
- Utilise statistical models and automation to feed supply/demand balances across our traded products.
- Take ownership of process improvement and analytical projects, both short- and medium-term.
ABOUT YOU
You’ll enjoy working at the intersection of markets, quantitative analysis and technology. You're intellectually curious, commercially minded and comfortable taking ownership of ambiguous problems rather than waiting for a predefined solution. We're looking for someone with:
- A Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a closely related quantitative discipline
- A genuine interest in commodity markets, quantitative research and trading
- Strong quantitative, analytical and modelling skills
- Strong Python skills for data analysis and modelling, including extensive experience with pandas and related libraries
- Experience in data visualisation/dashboarding, ideally Power BI
- An understanding of data engineering fundamentals including scheduling, automation, reproducibility, with a focus on building robust solutions that don’t fall over quietly
- Strong SQL and database skills, including data modelling, cleansing and optimisation
- Experience developing data pipelines and working with APIs
- The ability to learn new tools and business concepts quickly
- The ability to communicate complex analysis clearly to commercial stakeholders
- An inquisitive, collaborative mindset and the ability to operate effectively as priorities change
Desirable, but not essential:
- Familiarity with cloud-based data infrastructure
- Knowledge of physical commodity or shipping markets
WHAT WE OFFER
Alongside the opportunity to build your career within a global Trading & Shipping business, our benefits include:
- 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase up to 5 additional days through salary sacrifice
- Contributory pension with employer contributions
- Free on-site gym
- Enhanced family leave
- Employee Assistance Programme
