An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality (SHEQ) Manager to join a well-established UK-based chemical manufacturing organisation operating within a regulated COMAH environment. This is a senior leadership role, offering the chance to shape and drive SHEQ strategy, compliance, and culture across a complex industrial site supplying multiple high-specification sectors.
The Role
Reporting directly to senior leadership, you will take full responsibility for the SHEQ function, leading a multi-disciplinary team and ensuring the highest standards of process safety, regulatory compliance, and quality performance. You will act as the key point of contact for regulators and external stakeholders, while playing a critical role in embedding a proactive, safety-first culture across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, develop and support the Safety, Health, Environmental, Quality Control and Quality Assurance teams
- Maintain and continuously improve compliance with COMAH regulations, ISO standards (e.g. ISO9001, ISO14001) and other relevant frameworks
- Act as the primary contact for regulatory bodies, managing inspections, audits, and ongoing relationships
- Develop, implement and monitor SHEQ management systems, policies, and procedures
- Drive continuous improvement in process safety, risk management, and operational performance
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation
- Oversee customer audits, quality complaints, and technical queries
- Chair key internal committees relating to safety, compliance, and quality governance
- Provide expert guidance on SHEQ best practice, legislation, and industry standards
- Support development and delivery of training programmes to enhance workforce competence
Skills & Experience
- Proven SHEQ leadership experience within chemical manufacturing, COMAH, or other high-hazard/process industries
- Strong working knowledge of COMAH regulations and regulatory engagement (e.g. HSE, Environment Agency)
- Demonstrable experience in risk assessment, auditing, and incident investigation
- In-depth understanding of current SHE legislation and ISO management systems
- Experience managing quality systems and laboratory-related processes (e.g. COSHH, SDS, document control)
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to influence culture and drive continuous improvement in a safety-critical environment
Qualifications
- NEBOSH Certificate (essential); Diploma (preferred)
- Degree in Chemistry, Science, or Engineering (preferred)
- Knowledge of process safety, human factors, and behavioural safety is advantageous
- Experience with analytical techniques (e.g. GC, GC-MS, HPLC) is beneficial
