As we continue to support the delivery of critical transport and ticketing services, we are seeking a Database Administrator to join our IT Operations team. This role is responsible for the administration, support, maintenance, and continuous improvement of business-critical database platforms and associated systems.

Key Duties Include:

  • Administer, maintain, and support customer-facing SQL Server environments and associated test and development systems.
  • Monitor database performance and implement tuning, optimisation, and automation initiatives to improve system reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Support and maintain mission-critical database platforms, ensuring high availability and performance.
  • Work closely with application development teams to review database structures, SQL code, stored procedures, and system integrations.
  • Design and implement database solutions, including data migration, system configuration, and database enhancements.
  • Develop and maintain automated data flows and integrations between business systems.
  • Manage database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes, ensuring business continuity requirements are met.
  • Participate in the planning, testing, and execution of disaster recovery and business continuity exercises.
  • Proactively monitor production and test environments, identifying and resolving issues before they impact service delivery.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot complex technical incidents, providing subject matter expertise and timely resolution.
  • Manage database security, user administration, and access controls in line with company policies and industry best practice.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Support audits and work collaboratively with internal and external security and compliance stakeholders.
  • Participate in an on-call support rota and provide out-of-hours support during critical incidents when required.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, procedures, quality standards, and health, safety, security, and environmental requirements.
  • Support wider IT and business initiatives and undertake additional duties as reasonably required.

Requirements:

  • Essential Requirements
  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Microsoft SQL Server certification (MCTS or equivalent).
  • Formal training in Database Administration.
  • Demonstrable experience supporting business-critical IT systems within a 24/7 operational environment.
  • Strong experience administering Microsoft SQL Server environments.
  • Experience working with relational database technologies including SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
  • Experience developing and supporting Transact-SQL scripts, stored procedures, and database processes.
  • Experience implementing backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity solutions.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues within customer-focused operational environments.
  • Working knowledge of capacity planning, performance monitoring, and system optimisation.
  • Experience maintaining technical documentation and adhering to operational procedures and standards.
  • Desirable Requirements
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies including Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • ITIL Foundation certification.
  • Experience supporting reporting and business intelligence platforms such as IBM Cognos BI.
  • Experience providing out-of-hours support within operational support environments.
  • Knowledge of transport, ticketing, or other high-availability service environments.
