Role: Environmental Engineer. Location: Bristol. Duration: 6 months - initially. Role Type: Hybrid, 3 days a week onsite. Salary: Around 68 an hour, depending on experience.

Overview

An opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Engineer to join our globally renowned aerospace and defence client's System Safety and Environmental Engineering team. The role will support the integration of environmental management principles across defence products, systems, services and programmes, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, policies and industry standards.

Working closely with engineering teams, customers, suppliers and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), the successful candidate will help identify, assess and mitigate environmental risks throughout the product lifecycle whilst supporting the development of sustainable engineering solutions and environmental management strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the integration of environmental management requirements throughout the design, development and lifecycle of products, systems and services.
  • Assist Lead Environmental Engineers in developing and implementing environmental management strategies across projects and programmes.
  • Produce key environmental engineering documentation, including:
    • Environmental Management Plans
    • Registers of Environmental Standards
    • Environmental Features Matrices
    • Environmental Case Reports
    • Hazardous Materials Reports
  • Establish, monitor and review environmental objectives and performance targets.
  • Assess environmental considerations throughout the product lifecycle, influencing product selection, design, operation and disposal.
  • Support programme-level Environmental Health & Safety activities and contribute to the maintenance of the client's Environmental Management System.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK environmental legislation, policies and industry standards.
  • Develop platform sustainability plans and collaborate with sustainability teams to promote environmental improvement across UK programmes.
  • Work closely with engineering disciplines, customers and suppliers to gather and assess evidence supporting environmental management strategies.
  • Coordinate and participate in environmental management meetings with internal teams, customers and suppliers.
  • Ensure environmental requirements are appropriately flowed down to subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Review and approve supplier environmental management documentation and deliverables.
  • Support internal, external and supplier environmental audits, assessing engineering or programme changes for potential environmental impacts.
  • Investigate audit findings and develop appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
  • Provide environmental management input to System Safety Engineering activities where required.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of environmental design practices, processes and standards.

Skills & Experience

  • Degree qualified in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or another relevant technical discipline.
  • Previous experience in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Management, ideally within aerospace, defence, aviation or another highly regulated industry.
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation, regulatory requirements and industry standards, particularly:
    • UK REACH
    • ISO 14001
    • Defence Standard 00-051
  • Experience identifying and assessing environmental aspects, impacts and risks.
  • Knowledge of environmental assessment methodologies and risk analysis techniques.
  • Experience developing environmental management plans, reports, registers and supporting technical documentation.
  • Understanding of Environmental Management Systems (EMS) and environmental compliance processes.
  • Experience conducting or supporting environmental audits and implementing corrective and preventative actions.
  • Ability to assess environmental considerations throughout the engineering and product lifecycle.
  • Experience working with suppliers and subcontractors, including reviewing environmental deliverables and flowing down environmental requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical and environmental information to a range of stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational and planning capability, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities whilst delivering high-quality work to deadline.
  • Collaborative approach with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering, customer and supplier teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Qualifications & Additional Requirements

  • Membership of, or working towards membership of, a recognised UK environmental professional body such as ISEP would be advantageous.
  • Environmental auditing experience is desirable.
  • Must be a UK National and eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).
  • Flexibility to undertake occasional UK and international travel may be required.
