Our Development Engineering team is responsible for building and operating the monitoring, automation, and operational tooling that underpins 24×7 network operations across multiple customer environments. We are seeking a network‑first engineer with strong hands‑on experience in network operations who uses software development and scripting to solve operational problems. In the near term, this role will involve significant work with our SolarWinds monitoring platform, which is used to monitor and support multiple external customer networks. Longer term, the focus is on improving observability, automation, and operational resilience across our network operations estate. This is not a general full‑stack or product development role. The successful candidate will bring practical experience from a NOC, MSP, telecoms, or multi‑customer operations environment and apply development skills specifically to monitoring, alerting, automation, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Network Monitoring & Operations Tooling: Build, extend, and support network monitoring and operational tooling used to manage customer network environments.
- Work extensively with SolarWinds to enhance alerting, reporting, dashboards, and automation.
- Design and implement monitoring standards that deliver actionable operational insight rather than alert noise.
- Develop and optimise SWQL queries to support reporting, automation, and operational workflows.
- Improve monitoring coverage, data quality, and signal‑to‑noise ratio across customer environments.
- Support onboarding of new customer networks into monitoring platforms, including discovery, configuration, and validation.
- Collaborate closely with NOC and network engineering teams to improve visibility and incident detection.
Automation & Integrations
- Design and develop internal operational tools and scripts that improve scalability and reduce manual network operations work.
- Build integrations between monitoring platforms and internal systems using APIs and automation.
- Develop automation to standardise monitoring, configuration, and operational processes across customers.
- Contribute to the design of scalable, resilient monitoring and observability solutions.
- Maintain clear technical documentation and ensure work is tracked through Jira and other development tools.
About You
Required Experience
- Significant hands‑on experience in network operations, NOC, MSP, telecoms, or multi‑customer environments.
- Strong practical understanding of networking protocols such as TCP/IP, SNMP, DNS, OSPF, BGP and DHCP.
- Hands‑on experience with production network monitoring platforms, including SolarWinds.
- Experience responding to, diagnosing, and improving operational alerts and incidents.
- Experience writing and maintaining scripts or services (e.g. Python, PowerShell) to automate network operations tasks.
- Experience writing and optimising SWQL queries for monitoring, reporting, or automation.
- Experience integrating monitoring and operational tooling via APIs.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across network, monitoring, and tooling layers.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery environments.
Ideal Background
You are likely to have worked previously as a Network Engineer, NOC Engineer, or Operations Engineer who has moved into automation and tooling, or as a network monitoring/platform engineer within an MSP or telecoms environment. Candidates whose experience is primarily in consumer‑facing applications or product engineering are unlikely to find this role a good fit.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Stability and reliability of monitoring platforms and operational tooling.
- Reduction in alert noise and improved monitoring signal quality.
- Delivery of automation and tooling that improves operational efficiency.
- Successful onboarding of new customer environments.
- Delivery against sprint commitments.
- Code quality, documentation, and maintainability.
- Stakeholder and customer satisfaction.
