The Opportunity
We are building a modern, digital-first tax service to support sole traders and self-employed individuals ahead of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for ITSA in 2026. To make this a reality, we are hiring our first Tax Operations Manager, a senior tax specialist who will design, implement and manage the operational and compliance foundations of the Bolst Tax service. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in early-stage environments: someone who can build structure from scratch, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, and confidently manage tax service partners while owning the compliance and operational backbone of a new service.
You will work closely with the Head of Growth, Product, Operations and our tax service partners to create scalable workflows, ensure HMRC and AML compliance, and prepare the business for significant growth as we enter the MTD era. This is a pivotal position shaping the future of Bolst Tax within Indigo, with significant opportunity for career growth.
About Indigo Platform Limited
We are the product and technology division of Indigo Group, serving contractors and workforce management businesses nationwide. With a mission to reduce friction and put money back into users' pockets, we are scaling rapidly, building digital products and services that deliver win-win outcomes for workers, businesses and partners. Bolst Tax is our newest expansion area, focused on bringing a simple, compliant and modern tax solution to sole traders across the UK.
What You Will Lead
- Operational Model & Service Design: Shape the end-to-end operational model for the Bolst Tax service. Develop tax compliance frameworks, procedures and guidance to ensure accuracy and consistency. Support readiness for MTD for ITSA, building the operational and compliance foundations needed for 2026. Support non-MTD for ITSA workflows and compliance requirements.
- Compliance, Governance & HMRC Engagement: Act as the primary HMRC Representative for Bolst, including responding to compliance checks and enquiries. Support the MLRO by helping define and manage AML processes and partner oversight. Ensure the service meets all regulatory requirements for SA returns for sole traders, self-employed individuals and landlords. Develop audit and governance processes, including QA checks, risk controls and auditing frameworks.
- Outsourced Partner Management: Manage and oversee performance of our tax preparation outsource partners. Oversee the additional outsource partners responsible for independent QA auditing. Build strong relationships, ensuring delivery against SLAs, KPIs and compliance standards.
- Product & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Product team, providing tax expertise to shape compliant workflows and user journeys. Participate in discovery workshops, requirement reviews and testing of compliance outcomes.
- Operational Leadership & Future Team Growth: Provide day-to-day leadership of tax operations, ensuring continuous improvement and high-quality delivery. As the division grows, contribute to hiring, mentoring and supporting a blended tax/operations team.
What You Bring
- Strong technical expertise in Personal Tax and Self Assessment for sole traders, self-employed individuals and landlords.
- Experience managing tax operations, compliance frameworks or outsourced tax delivery.
- A solid understanding of AML, governance, risk and HMRC requirements.
- Familiarity with MTD (ITSA) compliance, workflows and operational impacts.
- Confident communicating with non-tax specialists and influencing cross-functional teams.
- Tax qualifications such as ATT or CTA strongly preferred (or equivalent deep experience).
- Build the entire tax operations model from the ground up. Define how Bolst Tax runs, scales and delivers compliance.
- This role has clear potential to grow into leading a larger tax/operations team as the service scales.
- Mission-led: Help deliver a modern tax service that supports UK sole traders with confidence and clarity.
- Flexible hybrid working with collaboration time in Cardiff or Teddington.
