About us

Kala The Arts is a leading voice in South Asian arts in the UK. It’s an award‑winning charity and a NPO of Arts Council. For over 26 years, we’ve created, produced and delivered high‑quality South Asian dance and visual arts projects, classes, workshops, residencies, research and development, performances both indoors and outdoors, and exhibitions across Hampshire and Berkshire under the artistic leadership and vision of Sushmita Pati.

Our work as a dance organisation spans grassroots engagement to international audiences, with a strong focus on artistic development, supporting artists, breaking barriers through arts, access and community wellbeing. In the past six years, we’ve collaborated with councils both national and local and local businesses to produce impactful mid‑scale events, creating opportunities and strengthening cultural diversity across the region and shaping the cultural landscape through dance. We connected to 35,000 diverse audience members across our platforms in 2024, and recently welcomed 55,000 to our exhibition at Reading Museum, Berkshire.

The opportunity

We are seeking a Freelance Digital Marketing Specialist. You’ll join a small but dynamic and growing team of staff, volunteers, and trustees, contributing to the visibility and impact of our work both locally and nationally. This role is ideal for someone who can bring strategic insight and hands‑on delivery to drive engagement, raise our profile locally and nationally, and develop new opportunities through digital platforms. You’ll be open‑minded and enthusiastic to contribute to the growth of an ambitious charity, using your experience in the sector to uphold high standards for Kala’s marketing channels.

The successful applicant will be in post during autumn, our busiest season, with the flagship outdoor Arts Festival Diwali Light It Up taking place in October. This period will require some flexibility, with an increase in paid hours to support key marketing activities. In the quieter months of December and January, working hours will be adjusted accordingly, with time off in lieu offered to ensure a balanced workload across the contract.

Key Responsibilities

  • Raise the national profile of Kala The Arts and grow audiences across classes, performances, events, and workshops.
  • Drive traffic to our new website and grow our social media presence, maintaining brand consistency and tone of voice.
  • Plan and execute digital marketing campaigns (SEO/SEM, email, social media, display ads).
  • Produce engaging written and visual content for blogs, posts, and campaigns.
  • Monitor and report on campaign performance, audience data, and ROI/KPIs to the CEO.
  • Support the Artistic Director with recruitment, creating job descriptions and advertising positions widely amongst the creative arts sector.
  • Strong attention to detail and subediting skills.
  • Stay up to date with digital trends and tools; identify and recommend relevant innovations.
  • Support younger participants to use Instagram and TikTok on event days.
  • Create marketing strategies and packs for specific events and shows. Brief and coordinate with designers, videographers, and photographers.
  • Develop targeted campaigns for Arts Council England‑supported activities.
  • Support PR through writing press releases and liaising with local and regional media.
  • Conduct keyword research and web analytics reporting.
  • Assist with paid media (subject to available funds).
  • Work closely with the CEO and stakeholders to maximise impact and legacy.

Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in digital marketing, particularly in the arts or nonprofit sectors.
  • Proficiency in social media tools, WordPress, and Photoshop.
  • Track record in managing SEO, SEM, email, and social media campaigns.
  • Excellent written and visual communication skills.
  • Strong initiative, time management, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and creatively.
  • A collaborative, proactive team player. Experience of working with venues, arts charities and NPO’s.
