A multi-national aerospace supplier based in the South West of the UK has urgent openings for both Permanent and contract-based Design Engineers.
Successful candidates will be responsible for designing and refining components and systems, ensuring they meet both functional and aesthetic requirements while adhering to budget, timelines, and regulatory standards. They will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality control, and project management, to take designs from concept through to production. Candidates should have strong proficiency in CAD software (preferably 3D Experience), a solid understanding of engineering principles, and a passion for problem-solving and continuous improvement. Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing project requirements are essential. The main role will be initially centred around aerospace customers, with opportunities to move into other projects and areas of industry as required.

Key Responsibilities:- Mechanical Design: Design mechanical systems, components, and assemblies based on project specifications, ensuring they are efficient, cost-effective, and manufacturable.
- Prototyping and Testing: Develop prototypes of mechanical components or systems and conduct functional and performance testing to validate designs.
- Troubleshooting and Problem Solving: Identify and resolve mechanical issues during the design, prototyping, or manufacturing phases, ensuring minimal disruption to the project schedule.
- Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturing engineers, to ensure smooth integration of mechanical systems into larger products or systems.
- Manufacturing Support: Collaborate with the manufacturing team to ensure designs are feasible and meet quality and cost targets during production. Assist with the selection of materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers.
- Documentation and Reporting: Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and manufacturing instructions. Communicate design rationale and test results to stakeholders.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay up to date with the latest mechanical engineering trends, technologies, and industry best practices to contribute to ongoing process improvements and innovation.
- Education: BSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. (Masters / additional certifications would be beneficial) or equivalent experience in industry or related apprenticeship scheme.
- Expected Experience: 3-4+ years of experience in a mechanical engineering role, preferably in a relevant industry (Aero, Automotive, Motor Sport etc). Excellent knowledge and expertise with CAD software, preferably 3D Experience / CATIA V5/V6. Skilled in surfacing, part modelling, and working within large assemblies. Knowledge of production methods, ideally metallics and composite manufacturing. Experience with mechanical prototyping and testing is advantageous.
- Additional Skills: An understanding of mechanical principles, including statics, dynamics, material science, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics. Proficiency in mechanical design and simulation software. Experience with materials selection and manufacturing processes. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot mechanical systems. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to document designs and collaborate with other engineering teams. Attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Structured and target-oriented task approach. Team player with excellent communication skills. Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Experience in a relevant industry, such as aerospace, automotive, consumer products, or industrial machinery.
- Experience with standards and processes within the aerospace industry is advantageous.
- Familiarity with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing (3D printing) or CNC machining.
- Knowledge of product lifecycle management (PLM) tools and ERP systems.
- Knowledge of quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001) and industry-specific standards.
- Must be fluent in written and spoken English; the ability to speak Spanish to a good level would also be an advantage.
Overview:
- Role: CAD Engineer, Permanent or contract (outside IR35) - please state which role preferred.
- Location: Bristol, UK - hybrid working agreement in place (2 days on site / 3 days remote).
- Duration: Permanent or contract (6 months initial, potential extensions).
- Rate: Permanent - Circa £45k pa dependent on proven experience plus usual benefits. Contract - up to £45ph Ltd Co DoE outside IR35.
