Overview

As a Lead Investigator, you will be part of a dynamic investigations team working locally and nationally on a wide range of investigations often in the public eye within the Investigation, Oversight and Casework directorate. You will lead all aspects of an investigation, from setting out the initial terms of reference, to collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses, drawing conclusions, and writing a final report, many of which are published. Reports may include recommendations for the police force or Police and Crime Commissioner about actions to be taken to improve practice and prevent mistakes in the future. After the investigation, investigations staff are responsible for supporting criminal, disciplinary and coronial proceedings which may follow.

The role requires a cultural knowledge accountability approach to work to produce rounded and robust outcomes. An on-call function outside normal hours is required, with an appropriate allowance paid under IOPC policy.

The IOPC is a public service committed to ensuring equal service and developing a diverse, socially aware workforce. The role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974; therefore, a standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be carried out for the successful candidate during the pre-employment process.

Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of investigations, from terms of reference to evidence collection, witness interviews, analysis, conclusions and final reporting.
  • Prepare reports that may be published and include recommendations to improve policing practice.
  • Support subsequent criminal, disciplinary and coronial proceedings as required.
  • Participate in an on-call out-of-hours function as part of the role.
  • Engage with diverse stakeholders and maintain high standards of analytical and report-writing quality.

Training and Development

  • Induction and training starting 11 May 2026, including the Professionalising Investigations Programme Level 1 (PIP1) to develop investigative skills and build a portfolio of evidence.
  • Complete the Pearson Unit 4 accreditation relating to leading IOPC investigations.
  • Opportunity to undertake PIP2 at a later stage as the programme launches.
  • Training delivered remotely and in person; revalidation is mandatory to maintain skills.
  • Mandatory hybrid training with some in-person sessions and potential overnight stays (expenses payable).

Recruitment Process

  • Stage 1: Sift questions and an Experience and IOPC Values question; Stage 1 interview via MS Teams (20–29 October).
  • Stage 2: Assessment Centre (10 November–5 December) including formal interview, role play and written exercises.
  • Assessments cover Experience, Behaviours, Strengths, Technical skills and Values.

Security and Nationality

  • Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check and baseline personnel security standard checks for government asset work.
  • Nationality requirements include UK nationals, certain Irish, Commonwealth, EU/EEA/Swiss nationals and related eligibility under the EUSS; see official guidance for specifics.
