Lead Investigator - Croydon

Our Investigation teams cover all of England and Wales, conducting hundreds of independent investigations each year under high pressure.

Investigators are supported by dedicated teams that perform significant background work.

As a Lead Investigator in the Investigation, Oversight and Casework directorate, you will collaborate locally and nationally on a diverse range of high‑profile investigations.

You will help shape the culture and ethos of the IOPC and contribute to improving the police complaints system.

Key responsibilities include leading investigations from initial terms of reference to evidence collection, witness interviews, analysis, and final reporting.

Reports are often published and may recommend actions for the police force or Police & Crime Commissioner to improve practice and prevent future mistakes.

After completion, investigators may support criminal, disciplinary, or coronial proceedings.

The role requires participation in an out‑of‑hours on‑call function with an appropriate allowance.

• Main Responsibilities
• Lead independent investigations into criminal and misconduct allegations according to IOPC guidelines.
• Conduct investigative actions—interviews, statements, case file preparation, and recommendations for criminal and/or disciplinary action.
• Visit incident scenes and supervise scene management to preserve and recover evidence.
• Write investigation reports for submission to the IOPC decision maker.
• Identify learning opportunities for police forces to improve services and protect the public.

Essential Experience

• Experience conducting investigative interviews, evidence gathering, analysis, and presentation.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent analytical and report‑writing skills with the ability to reach clear, rational, evidence‑based decisions.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse people and stakeholders, and commitment to equality and diversity.
• Capacity to deliver high‑quality work within demanding timescales.
• Ability to identify operational and organisational risk.
• Capability to adapt in a changing environment.
• Full UK driving licence.

• Pi P2 qualification or equivalent investigative experience.
