We are seeking a compassionate and patient support worker for our daughter, who is unable to read or write, has moderate to severe hearing loss, and is not always aware of dangers around her. Our daughter experiences mood swings and requires repetition throughout the day. She values her independence but needs significant support, patience, and encouragement. She does not like to be rushed or bossed around, so understanding and patience are essential.

Her hobbies include football, anything to do with horses, shopping (not clothes shops but practical shopping), looking at DVDs, music, cooking, and going to the cinema. Once she gets to know you, she is a chatterbox (but she can repeat herself a lot) and can be funny.

Your role will include:

  • Prompting her to have the appropriate clothes for what she is doing that day.
  • Brushing her hair and ensuring it is done properly.
  • Having her bus pass and her own money in her bag, ready for the day.
  • Ensuring she wears her hearing aids, as sometimes she will try to get away with not wearing them.
  • Assisting her with cooking at home and cleaning up afterwards.
  • Encouraging her to clean her room and make her bed.
  • Helping with practical everyday skills, as she needs prompting.

She can be very sociable when in the right mood but finds it hard to express herself, as her vocabulary is limited. However, she is open when in a family environment and around people she knows. We are looking for a PA who is patient, encouraging, and understanding to support our daughter, who can be complex at times. The most important part of the role is to build a trusting relationship and simply be a supportive friend while helping her with daily activities and encouraging her independence.

Duties include:

  • Personal grooming
  • Other relevant duties as required
  • Administration
  • Housekeeping
  • Shopping
  • Cooking
  • Transportation
  • Taking her to respite and picking her up

Requirements:

  • Respectful of the employer's privacy and confidentiality
  • Reliable with good timekeeping
  • Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative
  • Hygienic, tidy, and well organised
  • Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties
  • Patient and possess excellent interpersonal skills
  • Honest and cheerful
  • Creative
  • Able to always work to high standards of health & safety
  • Non-smoker
  • Someone who is experienced with complex behaviour, motivates her, and encourages her as much as possible

All applicants must have the right to work in the UK and be willing to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check if required.
