Shape high quality appraisal and revalidation. We’re looking for an experienced, confident and people focused head of Appraisal & Revalidation to step into a pivotal leadership role on a maternity cover basis, with an immediate start. This role sits at the heart of how we support doctors through appraisal, revalidation and professional development. You’ll work closely with the Responsible Officer, providing governance oversight, practical leadership and calm expertise across appraisal, revalidation and regulatory activity.

If you enjoy making complex processes clearer, supporting professionals to do their best work, and leading with both authority and warmth, this role will suit you perfectly. This is a senior, hands‑on role with real influence.

Day to day, you’ll:

  • Lead and oversee our appraisal and revalidation function, ensuring high standards, consistency and regulatory compliance
  • Provide leadership across the appraisal team
  • Support and quality‑assure medical appraisers, including onboarding, probation, feedback and performance concerns
  • Work closely with the Responsible Officer on governance matters including Fitness to Practise, complaints and concerns
  • Prepare and coordinate papers for key governance groups and committees
  • Interpret and apply GMC and NHSE guidance, keeping policies and processes up to date
  • Oversee reporting, data quality and operational coordination across appraisal and revalidation activity
  • Contribute to wider professional development initiatives and organisational leadership

In short: you’ll keep the system running smoothly, raise standards where needed, and support people to succeed.

You don’t need to tick every box, but you’ll likely bring:

  • Senior experience in appraisal, revalidation, governance or regulatory support
  • Experience managing or leading others, including handling performance issues with confidence and care
  • Strong experience preparing reports, papers and governance documentation
  • The ability to navigate complex regulatory environments calmly and clearly

Skills that matter:

  • Clear, confident communication (written and verbal)
  • Sound judgement and the ability to make decisions when things aren’t black and white
  • Excellent organisation and prioritisation skills
  • A collaborative, supportive leadership style
  • Experience working with or supporting a Responsible Officer
  • Knowledge of GMC or NHSE processes

A purpose driven role supporting doctors and high‑quality patient care. Senior level autonomy with strong, supportive leadership around you. A collaborative, friendly culture that values ideas and improvement. Hybrid working with at least one day a week in the London office. The chance to step into a visible, influential maternity cover role and make an immediate impact.

Interested? This is an immediate start maternity cover, ideal for someone available now (or very soon) who wants a senior, meaningful role without a long‑term commitment.
