We are looking for full time Yard Operative / Relief Van Driver based at our St Leonards branch. You will be responsible for the delivery of products to customers, with key accountability for ensuring the quality and timing of service is first class. To provide excellent customer service by safely and efficiently managing the yard, loading/unloading materials, and making timely deliveries to customers. You will be the face of the branch when on the road, ensuring orders are delivered accurately and professionally.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist customers in locating and loading building materials.
- Safely load/unload goods from supplier vehicles and customer collections using forklifts (if licensed).
- Maintain yard organisation and cleanliness, ensuring materials are stored safely and correctly.
- Carry out regular stock checks and report shortages or damages.
- Follow all health & safety procedures, including PPE requirements.
- Deliver building materials to customers using a company van (3.5t or similar), ensuring safe and legal driving at all times.
- Plan efficient delivery routes in line with schedules provided.
- Ensure all goods are correctly loaded, secured, and signed for.
- Provide excellent customer service upon delivery, resolving minor queries where possible.
Skills & Experience Required
- Full UK driving licence.
- Experience in a similar role within a builders’ merchant, construction, or trade environment (preferred but not essential).
- Good knowledge of building materials and products (desirable).
- Forklift licence (counterbalance) desirable but training may be provided.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and perform manual handling duties.
The Hours
Week 1: Monday to Friday 07:00-16:30
Week 2: Monday to Friday 07:00-16:30, Saturday 08:00-12:00
