We’re supporting a growing technology consultancy delivering critical services into a major public sector customer, and we’re looking for an experienced Application Support Engineer to join a high-performing support and engineering function. This is not a traditional service desk role. We’re looking for someone with a strong software engineering background who can operate across L2/L3 incidents, troubleshoot complex production issues, support live applications and mentor more junior engineers within the team. The environment is varied and fast-moving, so we need someone who is comfortable working across multiple technologies and able to quickly understand different systems, services and codebases.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Supporting and resolving complex L2/L3 application incidents
  • Investigating issues across live production systems and services
  • Working across multiple technology stacks which could include PHP, .NET, Python, JVM and cloud-based applications
  • Performing root cause analysis and supporting long-term fixes
  • Collaborating with engineering, infrastructure and delivery teams
  • Supporting operational stability, monitoring and service improvements
  • Mentoring and supporting less experienced engineers within the support function
  • Participating in an on-call rota (1 in 4 weeks)

What we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years’ experience in Application Support, Software Engineering or Production Support environments
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging capability across distributed applications
  • Previous experience supporting live production systems at L2/L3 level
  • Experience across multiple languages/technology stacks such as: PHP, .NET / C#, Python etc
  • APIs / integrations
  • Comfortable reading and understanding code to diagnose issues
  • Experience working in complex enterprise or public sector environments
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to mentor and support junior engineers
  • Experience within ITIL/service management environments would be highly beneficial

Desirable Experience:

  • Cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS)
  • Monitoring/logging tools
  • CI/CD environments
  • Incident management and post-mortem processes
