We’re supporting a growing technology consultancy delivering critical services into a major public sector customer, and we’re looking for an experienced Application Support Engineer to join a high-performing support and engineering function. This is not a traditional service desk role. We’re looking for someone with a strong software engineering background who can operate across L2/L3 incidents, troubleshoot complex production issues, support live applications and mentor more junior engineers within the team. The environment is varied and fast-moving, so we need someone who is comfortable working across multiple technologies and able to quickly understand different systems, services and codebases.
What you’ll be doing:
- Supporting and resolving complex L2/L3 application incidents
- Investigating issues across live production systems and services
- Working across multiple technology stacks which could include PHP, .NET, Python, JVM and cloud-based applications
- Performing root cause analysis and supporting long-term fixes
- Collaborating with engineering, infrastructure and delivery teams
- Supporting operational stability, monitoring and service improvements
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced engineers within the support function
- Participating in an on-call rota (1 in 4 weeks)
What we’re looking for:
- 5+ years’ experience in Application Support, Software Engineering or Production Support environments
- Strong troubleshooting and debugging capability across distributed applications
- Previous experience supporting live production systems at L2/L3 level
- Experience across multiple languages/technology stacks such as: PHP, .NET / C#, Python etc
- APIs / integrations
- Comfortable reading and understanding code to diagnose issues
- Experience working in complex enterprise or public sector environments
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to mentor and support junior engineers
- Experience within ITIL/service management environments would be highly beneficial
Desirable Experience:
- Cloud platforms (Azure and/or AWS)
- Monitoring/logging tools
- CI/CD environments
- Incident management and post-mortem processes
- Consultancy or managed service environments
