The Business

Our client is a long-established and highly respected business headquartered in Glasgow, with a specialist reputation across healthcare, life sciences, higher education and specialist laboratory design. Over recent years, the business has strengthened its financial governance, forecasting capability and board structure. The next stage of development now requires a commercially astute finance professional who can elevate reporting capability, improve financial visibility and support more informed strategic decision-making across the business.

The Opportunity

This is not a traditional transactional finance or bookkeeping role. The business is seeking an experienced finance professional who can operate as a trusted advisor to the Board — bringing commercial insight, modern reporting capability and strategic financial leadership on a part-time basis. Working closely with the Practice Manager, Directors and Non-Executive Board members, you will take ownership of management reporting, improve the quality and presentation of financial information and help shape future financial planning and business strategy. The successful candidate will be capable of moving the finance function beyond accurate reporting into proactive business partnering and commercially driven decision support. This role would suit an experienced Finance Director, Commercial Finance Manager or senior finance professional seeking a high-impact portfolio or fractional opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Financial Reporting & Insight
    • Lead, prepare and enhance monthly management reporting for the Board and leadership team
    • Develop clear, commercially focused and visually engaging reporting packs
    • Translate financial information into meaningful insight, trends, commentary and forecasts
    • Improve the presentation, usability and clarity of financial reporting
    • Deliver analysis around:
      • Fee performance and profitability
      • Forecast versus actual performance
      • Cash flow and working capital
      • Debtors and aged receivables
      • Revenue pipelines and projections
      • Operational and commercial performance indicators
  • Financial Planning & Governance
    • Review and improve the annual budgeting process, implementing best practice where appropriate
    • Ensure cash flow forecasting is accurately prepared, monitored and reported
    • Take ownership of reporting integrity, consistency and financial confidence across the business
    • Act as the primary interface with external accountants and advisors
    • Support ongoing strengthening of financial governance and forecasting capability
  • Commercial Finance & Business Partnering
    • Act as a strategic finance partner to Directors and senior stakeholders
    • Support the business in driving performance, accountability and informed commercial decision-making
    • Bring experience and ideas from larger or more sophisticated organisations to improve internal reporting and finance processes
    • Contribute to future business planning, including growth initiatives, structural planning and potential merger/acquisition activity
    • Help develop a more forward-looking and commercially focused finance function
  • Team & Stakeholder Management
    • Work closely with the Practice Manager and in-house finance support
    • Review weekly tasks, activities and outputs with the in-house accountant and help prioritise workload
    • Collaborate effectively with Non-Executive Directors and senior leadership
    • Attend Board meetings where required to present financial information and answer queries
    • Communicate financial information confidently and clearly to non-financial stakeholders
  • Systems & Environment
    • Sage 50 Cloud
    • Internal project and fee tracking systems
    • Existing management reporting spreadsheets and forecasting models
