We are seeking an experienced and proactive Principal Design Engineer to lead the management, coordination, and delivery of health and safety throughout the pre-construction phase of complex projects. This role is central to ensuring that safety is embedded within design from the earliest stages, in full compliance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM 2015), the Health and Safety at Work Act, and other relevant legislation and industry standards.

The Principal Design Engineer will be responsible for coordinating design risk management, ensuring hazards are identified, eliminated where possible, or reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP). The role also involves managing multi-disciplinary design interfaces, resolving conflicts, and ensuring clear communication across all stakeholders. In addition, the role oversees the preparation and delivery of Technical Files and Operation & Maintenance (O&M) documentation, ensuring all information supports safe construction, operation, and maintenance across the full asset lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning, management, and coordination of design-phase health and safety
  • Ensure full compliance with CDM 2015, the Health and Safety at Work Act, and relevant standards
  • Identify, assess, and manage design risks, applying ALARP principles
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams and manage design interfaces
  • Facilitate effective communication between all design stakeholders
  • Review and challenge design proposals to ensure safety is embedded
  • Develop and maintain design risk registers and related documentation
  • Resolve design conflicts and promote effective, safe design solutions
  • Oversee the compilation and delivery of Technical Files and O&M manuals
  • Ensure all documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant with project and legal requirements
Key Requirements
  • Proven experience in a Principal Designer, Design Manager, or senior design engineering role within construction or civil engineering projects
  • Strong working knowledge and practical application of CDM Regulations 2015
  • In-depth understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act and relevant UK/EU design legislation
  • Experience leading and coordinating multi-disciplinary design teams
  • Strong capability in identifying and managing design risks and applying ALARP principles
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Civil, Structural, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards professional accreditation (e.g. ICE, IStructE, IMechE)
  • Principal Designer training or recognised CDM qualification (e.g. APS membership/training)
  • Strong technical understanding of safety-in-design and risk management processes
  • Experience producing and reviewing: Design risk registers, Technical Files, Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manuals
