Some planning roles are buried in process. This one needs someone who can actually move things forward. We're looking for an experienced Senior Planner to join a busy Development Management service, dealing with a varied caseload where good judgement, clear advice and confident decision‑making matter.

You’ll be working on planning applications, interpreting plans, applying planning law and policy, negotiating with developers and interested parties, and preparing reports that stand up to scrutiny. There will also be committee involvement, so you’ll need to be comfortable presenting clearly, dealing with challenge, and explaining planning issues in a way that makes sense.

This role would suit someone who knows Development Management properly — not just the theory, but the reality of balancing policy, politics, residents, applicants, deadlines and competing interests.

Responsibilities
  • Assessing and progressing planning applications
  • Interpreting plans, planning policy, legislation and appeal decisions
  • Preparing clear reports, letters and recommendations
  • Negotiating effectively with developers, applicants and stakeholders
  • Mediating between opposing views where required
  • Supporting committee work, including occasional out‑of‑hours meetings
  • Using planning systems, data and reporting tools
  • Working under pressure and managing competing deadlines
Qualifications
  • A degree in Town Planning
  • Full membership of the RTPI or RICS Planning Division
  • At least 3 years’ post‑qualification Development Management experience
  • Strong knowledge of planning law, planning practice and plan interpretation
  • Good written, verbal and presentation skills
  • Confidence dealing with developers, residents, members and internal teams
  • The ability to work independently, make sound judgements and stay calm under pressure
The Person

This needs someone who is professional, steady and credible. You’ll be tactful when needed, firm when required, and able to deal with people who may be frustrated, angry or under pressure.

You’ll be joining a team where good planning judgement, accountability and public service values matter. The right person will be able to manage their own caseload, support others, and contribute properly to a busy Development Management service.

This is a strong opportunity for a qualified planner with solid Development Management experience who wants a role with variety, responsibility and genuine public sector impact.
