Imperium Commodity Search is confidentially retained by a well-established and growing energy trading business in London. As part of its continued diversification and expansion of asset class offering, our client is seeking a Biofuels Trader to join the business and accelerate its growing presence across the European biofuels market, with a particular focus on HVO, UCO and SAF.

This is not a standing-start opportunity. The business is already actively pushing into the sector, with trades ready to progress and a strong commercial platform from which the successful candidate can build. The ownership team has significant prior exposure to biofuels from before founding the company and brings longstanding, high-quality sourcing relationships for feedstocks across the Far East. The incoming Trader will therefore join an established trading environment with genuine deal flow, sourcing capability and senior-level support already in place.

Working closely with the CEO and ownership, the successful candidate will bring a strong grounding in physical biofuels trading, good practical knowledge of HVO, UCO and SAF, and an understanding of the UK/EU regulatory and sales landscape. The role offers the opportunity to take increasing ownership of trading activity, develop customers and routes to market, and help shape the next phase of the firm’s biofuels growth.

This is a long‑term progression opportunity for an ambitious trader who wants to move beyond simply managing an existing book. As the business grows, there is clear scope to broaden product and geographical coverage, take on greater commercial responsibility and, over time, play a key role in growing the wider biofuels business and team.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Trade and develop commercial opportunities across HVO, UCO & SAF and wider biofuels products, building on the firm’s existing activity, live opportunities and sourcing platform.
  • Establish and grow sales channels across key European, Middle Eastern and other relevant global biofuels markets.
  • Keep up to date with global biofuel analysis, regulation and market movements to guide trading strategy and work with senior management on a responsive and agile trading approach.
  • Leverage the ownership team’s longstanding Far Eastern feedstock and producer relationships while developing additional sourcing opportunities where commercially attractive.
  • Build and retain relationships with refineries, distributors, blenders and end users in the European market to grow sales channels for HVO, UCO & SAF and related biofuels products.
  • Identify and develop opportunities across the biofuels value chain, from feedstock and raw materials through to finished products.
  • Ensure the biofuels book is appropriately hedged and risk limits are adhered to whilst driving PnL and volume growth.
  • Short-Mid Term: Take increasing commercial responsibility for the growth of the biofuels business, with scope to expand product/geographical coverage and contribute to the future build‑out of the team.

Requirements:

  • Circa 2-7 years’ experience within physical biofuels, renewable fuels or a closely related energy trading environment.
  • A good commercial trading background, with evidence of generating PnL, developing customers, growing volumes and/or originating trading opportunities.
  • Strong practical exposure to HVO and/or UCO/SAF, with a good understanding of the relevant market participants, pricing dynamics and trade flows.
  • A proven track record in European biofuels markets with a good network at one or more points across the value chain.
  • Good understanding of the regulatory framework around UK/EU biofuels, HVO, UCO and SAF markets.
  • Strong analytical and commercial understanding of global biofuels markets.
  • Far Eastern/Chinese sourcing exposure is beneficial but not required; the business already has strong existing relationships and capability in the region.
  • Hedging/Paper experience is preferred but not required.
  • An entrepreneurial and collaborative mindset, with the ambition to take on increasing responsibility as the business grows.
  • Fluency in English and strong communication ability.
