Job overview

This Clinical Research Fellowship is based within the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Renal and Transplant Centre at Hammersmith Hospital and is offered for a period of 30 months. The Fellowship provides 75% protected research time and 25% clinical training. Fellows will undertake a programme of high-quality clinical or translational research under the supervision of an academic within Imperial College London, with the expectation that they will register for and complete an MD(Res). Depending on their research interests and career plans, fellows may subsequently progress to externally funded research fellowships or PhD programmes. During the clinical component of the post, fellows will gain experience across renal medicine and kidney transplantation within the Imperial College Healthcare renal service, including exposure to a broad range of specialist nephrology services. Each fellow will have an educational supervisor and research supervisor and will have access to the wider academic, educational and mentoring opportunities available through Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College London.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Research Fellow will undertake a programme comprising 75% protected research time and 25% clinical training within the Renal and Transplant Directorate. The post is designed to provide integrated academic and clinical training, with the majority of time protected for completion of a higher research degree.

The principal responsibility of the Clinical Research Fellow will be to undertake and complete a high-quality programme of clinical or translational research under the supervision of an Imperial College London academic. During clinical time, the fellow will participate in the delivery of renal and transplant services at Hammersmith Hospital and, where appropriate, associated Imperial College Healthcare sites. Clinical duties will be appropriate to the fellow's level of experience and will provide exposure to general and specialist nephrology, dialysis and kidney transplantation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Research – 75%

The principal responsibility of the Clinical Research Fellow will be to undertake and complete a high-quality programme of clinical or translational research under the supervision of an Imperial College London academic. The research project will be developed according to the fellow's interests and previous experience and the expertise of the supervisory team.

Research responsibilities will include, as appropriate to the individual project:

  • development and delivery of the research project, including relevant regulatory and governance requirements;
  • recruitment and clinical assessment of research participants where applicable;
  • collection, analysis and interpretation of research data;
  • participation in relevant laboratory, experimental medicine or clinical research activities;
  • presentation of work at local, national and international scientific meetings;
  • preparation of abstracts, scientific papers and the MD(Res) thesis; and
  • active participation in the Directorate's research groups, meetings and wider academic programme.

Clinical – 25%

During clinical time, the fellow will participate in the delivery of renal and transplant services at Hammersmith Hospital. Clinical activities may include inpatient renal and transplant medicine, outpatient clinics and participation in specialist multidisciplinary meetings, including renal histopathology, imaging, transplantation, glomerular disease, lupus and vasculitis MDTs. The clinical component of the Fellowship will, where feasible, be planned to complement the fellow's research programme while maintaining and developing their clinical competencies in renal medicine. The Clinical Research Fellow will participate in the renal middle-grade out-of-hours rota alongside other appropriately experienced doctors within the Directorate.

Qualifications

  • MRCP
  • Appropriate Royal College Membership or equivalent
  • Active participation in and broad understanding of Clinical Governance.

Language

  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements.

Audit

  • Evidence of involvement and leadership in multi‑disciplinary audit.
  • Understanding of principles of clinical audit.

Teaching & Training

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff
  • Formal training in teaching skills

  • Evidence of clinical leadership skills.
