IWM is one of the world's leading authorities on conflict and its impact on people's lives. Our galleries blend objects, stories and digital media to create powerful and memorable experiences for our visitors. You'll join a creative and supportive AV Production team who deliver high‐quality media across our permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions and public spaces. We value curiosity, problem‐solving and a willingness to learn, and we're passionate about storytelling through digital technology.

Digital media is at the heart of how we help visitors understand the causes, course and consequences of conflict. The AV Developer plays a key role in shaping these experiences, creating linear film, audio and interactive media that bring powerful stories to life. This role combines hands‐on production skills with problem‐solving and technical creativity, contributing directly to how millions of visitors experience IWM each year. You'll work closely with content, design, exhibition and AV maintenance teams, and occasionally with external suppliers, to deliver high‐quality, accessible and engaging media.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Creating interactive touchscreen interfaces using HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and developing other digital interactives using sensors, buttons or custom inputs.
  • Producing video content that blends interviews, archive footage and B‐roll, using software such as Adobe Premiere or similar.
  • Editing audio content — from oral testimony to atmospheric soundscapes, including cleaning and enhancing archive recordings.
  • Designing motion graphics including titles, lower thirds, animated maps and UI elements for interactives.
  • Producing accurate, high‐quality subtitles for gallery film content.
  • Working with exhibition and content teams to develop digital media from storyboard to final delivery.
  • Ensuring media meets accessibility standards, IWM brand guidelines and the needs of target audiences.
  • Collaborating with internal and external designers to ensure visual consistency across exhibits.
  • Liaising with IWM's AV Maintenance and Infrastructure teams to specify hardware, test media and ensure it functions reliably in‐gallery.
  • Overseeing external developers or AV producers when required.
  • Coordinating user testing for interactive exhibits.
  • Maintaining organised project records, backups and version control.
  • Updating or upgrading existing AV exhibits and supporting their long‐term reliability.
  • Attending project meetings across IWM sites; some occasional out‐of‐hours work may be necessary.

What We're Looking For

  • A relevant degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience designing and programming interactive software (especially HTML/CSS/JavaScript).
  • Strong visual skills and understanding of layout, typography and graphic design principles.
  • A portfolio demonstrating storytelling through digital media.
  • Proficiency with Photoshop or similar image‐editing tools.
  • Experience with video editing tools such as Premiere or Final Cut Pro.
  • Experience using After Effects or similar motion graphics software.
  • Ability to manage your workload across multiple projects and deadlines.

It's a bonus (but not essential) if you have:

  • Experience with audio editing software such as Audition.
  • Skills in 3D packages such as SketchUp, Cinema 4D or Maya.
  • Practical project‐management experience.
  • Strong problem‐solving skills and a willingness to learn new tools and techniques.

How You'll Work

You'll work with exhibition developers, content creators, designers, AV maintenance teams and external suppliers. Collaboration is central to this role: you'll be part of a close‐knit team making digital media that enhances physical gallery environments. Every project will involve creative problem‐solving, technical collaboration and hands‐on production.

What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)

  • Delivering high‐quality video, audio and interactive media for exhibitions and gallery updates.
  • Building strong working relationships with content, exhibition, technical and design teams.
  • Taking ownership of interactive development using HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
  • Creating media that meets accessibility and brand guidelines and performs reliably in gallery environments.
  • Managing multiple projects effectively with clear documentation and version control.
  • Confidently supporting testing, hardware integration and coordination with AV maintenance colleagues.
