Imperial Recruitment Group are delighted to be partnering with East Durham College on a retained basis to support the appointment of an Assistant Principal – Learner Services and Inclusion
Job Purpose
You will be responsible for leading and promoting inclusive education practices across key student facing services.
You will create an environment where all students feel welcome, respected, safe and that they belong, with particular focus on disadvantaged and vulnerable students, learners with SEND or high needs, care experienced learners and those facing barriers to learning or wellbeing.
You will also act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the college.
To contribute towards the achievement of the College’s mission, vision and strategic objectives and targets, through being a member of the College Leadership Group and by ensuring that the college is represented at key external networks.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Under the direction of the Vice Principal, be accountable for the exceptional operation of student facing services for enrolment, student support, high needs, Pathways provision, Progression Coaches and other support services such as counselling service and the LRC.
- Shape and communicate a clear approach to inclusion across the college identifying patterns, strengths and risks which translate into robust action plans to improve the student experience and achieve consistency.
- Collaborate with College Management Group colleagues to interrogate policies, procedures and processes to ensure they are inclusive at the point of development whilst also challenging the lived reality of students.
- Assume responsibility for the monitoring and evaluation of inclusion across the college providing reports to CLG on the performance of all groups including those who are disadvantaged or vulnerable.
- Ensure the accountability of managers within your area setting KPIs where relevant with rigorous monitoring and challenge.
- Ensure all legal statutory requirements are met for students with SEND including taking responsibility for high needs funding, ensuring appropriate evidence is in place to support claims and the timely receipt of high needs funding.
- To contribute to the college Self-Assessment Report and Quality Improvement processes.
- To ensure that students receive the highest standards of customer service and student support including advice and guidance, interviews, initial assessment, tutorial and enrichment provision.
- Lead on the achievement of relevant aspects of the Strategic Plan through development of a local College Operational Plan.
- Responsible for budget setting, monitoring and control within all areas of responsibility.
- Effectively manage resources, human, physical and financial, to support the College in achieving its targets.
- To lead a culture of high standards and expectations amongst the staff team providing challenge where required.
- To provide highly effective performance management providing leadership, support, direction, challenge and inspiration for your team.
- To lead, contribute to and co-operate with staff development provision, which leads and supports staff in the development of innovative teaching and learning strategies to improve student progression.
- To lead on and promote best practice in EDI within all aspects of the college, promoting a culture of respect and contributing to broader issues of community cohesion through acting as the joint chair of the EDIB committee
- Designated Safeguarding Lead
- Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the college ensuring the safety and well-being of all students with particular reference to those under 18 years and vulnerable adults.
- To Chair weekly cross college safeguarding meetings and ensuring concerns are appropriately raised, acted upon and closed where relevant.
- Provide training for staff and Governors at key points throughout the year.
- Ensure the college is fully compliant with key safeguarding legislation and welfare policies, collaborating with external agencies where required.
- To undertake relevant safeguarding training as necessary to both lead and be an effective member of the College’s safeguarding team.
- General
- To contribute effectively to College Leadership Group and represent the College in key external networks.
- Represent the college externally on matters relating to your areas of responsibility.
- Participate in the College Performance Appraisal Development Programme, agree an action plan and undertake the required training in order to update skills and meet the requirements of the College and Departmental Strategic Plan and Service Standards.
- Undertake any other duties, appropriate to the grade of the post, as required from time to time.
- Comply with College Policies and Procedures and the Staff Code of Conduct.
- To take appropriate responsibility for PREVENT and safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of children and/or vulnerable adults.

- To understand and adhere to college Health and Safety polices and guidelines ensuring compliance with statutory legislation and taking a responsibility for your own and other’s health and safety.
