As Senior Building Surveyor, you will provide strategic leadership, governance and assurance for building surveying, building fabric asset management and statutory compliance across Imperial’s diverse estate. Working within the Critical Infrastructure and Asset Strategy Team, you will help safeguard and enhance academic, research, residential, healthcare and commercial facilities, ensuring they remain safe, compliant, sustainable, functional and able to deliver long‑term value. You will be Imperial’s senior subject matter expert for building surveying, shaping estate‑wide asset investment, lifecycle, building safety and compliance strategies, and providing trusted, authoritative advice to senior leaders, project boards and regulatory stakeholders.
This is a highly influential opportunity to make a visible impact on a world‑class estate. You will work in close partnership with Maintenance Operations, Fire Safety, Capital Projects Delivery, Asset Management and external advisers, translating complex condition, risk and performance information into clear priorities, robust investment cases and practical solutions. You will lead a Building Surveyor and provide professional leadership to consultants, contractors and specialist advisers, fostering a collaborative, customer‑focused culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement and high professional standards.
What you would be doing
You will lead building condition and measured surveys, inspections and defect investigations across the estate, developing proportionate repair, refurbishment, renewal and replacement solutions. You will prepare specifications, schedules of work, tender and contract information, and drive the development of planned preventative maintenance, risk‑based maintenance and lifecycle replacement programmes. Using high‑quality asset information, you will establish investment plans, performance indicators and a strategic roadmap for building fabric renewal, ensuring that works are prioritised according to condition, risk, operational need, available funding and long‑term estate objectives.
Building safety will be central to your remit. You will act as the building fabric lead for compliance with the Building Safety Act 2022, Building Regulations and Higher‑Risk Building requirements, supporting robust governance, regulatory engagement and the management of Golden Thread information. You will lead assurance activity relating to building fabric and passive fire protection, including compartmentation, fire doors, fire stopping and cavity barriers; manage statutory approvals and submissions where required; and advise on relevant Client, Principal Designer and Principal Contractor responsibilities. You will also lead complex compliance, refurbishment, lifecycle renewal and remedial programmes from planning through to completion—managing budgets, procurement, contracts, contractor performance, quality, safety, risk, programme reporting and project records. Through clear executive reporting, business cases and investment recommendations, you will enable sound decisions and value‑for‑money delivery.
