Are you an experienced finance leader who wants to use your expertise to support ambitious global health research?
As Finance Manager for Target Malaria, you will lead the finance function for an international, not-for-profit research consortium developing and sharing novel genetic technologies to help reduce malaria transmission. Working across partner institutions in Africa, Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States, you will provide the financial leadership, insight and constructive challenge needed to support sound decisions, responsible stewardship and effective programme delivery.
This is a senior management role within Target Malaria. You will work closely with the Global Principal Investigator, Director of Programme Management and consortium leadership, taking day-to-day ownership of a complex, multi-institutional and multi-currency portfolio.
What you would be doing
- Lead financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, monitoring and reporting across the consortium, ensuring resources remain aligned with strategic priorities and funding requirements.
- Act as the programme's senior financial adviser, translating complex information into clear analysis, practical recommendations and constructive challenge for senior leaders.
- Own strategic financial plans, reforecasting, budget-versus-actual reporting and scenario planning, including the financial implications of programme growth and movement towards field implementation.
- Oversee subaward and partner finances, multi-currency budgets, foreign exchange reviews, funder reporting, grant compliance and the financial management of research sub-contracts.
- Develop and continuously improve financial systems, controls, templates and reporting tools so that information is accurate, timely, transparent and useful for decision-making.
- Provide financial and commercial input to grants, contracts, consultancy agreements and memoranda of understanding, working with research services, legal and procurement colleagues.
- Support internal and external audits and promote consistent, proportionate financial controls and assurance across partner institutions.
- Line-manage, coach and develop the Finance Officer, delegating routine activity through clear processes while building their confidence and independent capability.
What we are looking for
You will combine strong technical finance expertise with sound judgement, clarity and the confidence to work collaboratively across a geographically dispersed partnership. In particular, you will bring:
- A recognised professional accountancy or finance qualification, such as ACCA, CIMA or ACA, or substantial equivalent senior-level experience in financial leadership and management.
- Substantial experience of financial planning, forecasting and managing significant budgets within an academic, research, global health or similarly complex multi-partner environment.
- Experience acting as a strategic finance business partner to senior leaders, providing insight, challenge and recommendations to support decisions, resource allocation, sustainability and risk management.
- Experience preparing and presenting reports for funders or donors, costing research proposals and applying Full Economic Costing methodology.
- Experience working internationally, including managing multi-currency budgets and reporting across multiple jurisdictions.
- Advanced Excel and financial-modelling skills, together with experience of research costing, grant-management and enterprise finance systems such as Worktribe, Oracle Grants Management, Oracle Financials, ICIS or equivalent.
- Proven line-management experience, with the ability to coach, develop and build confidence in others.
- Communication and influencing skills, including the ability to explain complex financial issues clearly to non-finance colleagues and build trusted relationships with partners and funders.
- Experience of supporting programmes operating across Africa, working in higher education or global health, and managing major philanthropic funding would be advantageous.
What we can offer you
- The opportunity to shape the financial management of an ambitious international programme working towards a world free of malaria.
- A visible senior role, working with programme leadership, scientists and professional teams across a diverse global consortium.
- The scope to improve systems, strengthen financial capability and influence how resources are prioritised as the programme evolves.
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and contribute to Imperial's mission to use science for humanity.
- Benefit from a sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 43 days' annual leave and generous pension schemes).
- Access to flexible working, family leave, workplace wellbeing support, staff networks and a range of other employee benefits.
- Interest-free season ticket loan schemes for travel.
- Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
