The Billerbeck Lab in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London has an open position for a Research Associate (postdoctoral level) in Gas Precision Fermentation. The role is funded by Horizon Europe through the AIR2FOOD project – Europe’s first integrated gas-based precision fermentation ecosystem, converting CO₂ into high-value food ingredients using engineered microorganisms.
What you will be doing:
- Conduct world-class research by developing food protein cell factories for gas precision fermentation using hydrogen-oxidising bacteria (Xanthobacter species).
- Engage in genetic engineering, strain development, bioprocess development, small-scale bioreactor design, scale-up, stakeholder engagement, ecosystem building, and product translation.
- Plan and execute research in a major work package of the grant, design methods, collect and analyse data, and collaborate closely with industry partners, food accelerators, and universities.
- Present findings at international conferences, publish in refereed journals, and contribute to project reports.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students and support the smooth running of the laboratory.
What we are looking for:
- A PhD in (bio)engineering, engineering biology/synthetic biology, natural sciences, biological sciences or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.
- Practical research experience, publications in relevant refereed journals, and experience liaising with collaborators and sponsors.
- Experience in a broad range of techniques including molecular biology (cloning, genome engineering), strain development, microbiological culturing, method development, and bioprocess development.
- Ability to develop and apply new concepts and a creative approach to problem-solving.
- Ability to organise own work autonomously, be proactive, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to lead a small research team and motivate others to achieve high-standard work.
