Are you an outstanding clinical researcher looking to develop your research career?

As a world leading centre for research and clinical training, we at the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) are keen to attract and cultivate the most promising clinical researchers at all career stages.

The AHSC Post-Doctoral, Post-CCT Research Fellowship (APPRF) is a rare opportunity for Consultant level doctors aspiring to progress their research careers at Imperial University. The award funds high quality clinical academics who are within 1 year of completing Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or maximum of 5 years post-CCT to work towards intermediate fellowship / clinician scientist programmes. Through the Fellowship, you will receive funding for up to 3 years protected time to conduct research (both salary and consumables) and write applications for your next fellowship, alongside a 50% clinical role within an AHSC linked NHS Trust. This opportunity is available in 3 defined specialty areas and designed for individuals with the potential to become leaders in academic medicine with a commitment to conducting research at Imperial College London.

To be eligible you must have been awarded a PhD or MD before starting the APPRF and hold a CCT or be within 12 months of acquiring CCT (or equivalent) at the time of application and have CCTd by the time of starting. The award is for a maximum of 3 years undertaking part-time research whilst maintaining clinical work ~2.5 days per week (subject to being offered an Honorary contract at one of our partner NHS Trusts, which will require you to undergo some additional clinical consultant processes to meet Trust and Royal College requirements).

The Fellowship is funded jointly by the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine academic Departments and our NHS clinical partners. APPRF opportunities are available in 3 clinical specialty priority areas:

  1. Cardiometabolic Medicine – for applicants with CCT in Cardiology, with clinical work at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, hosted academically by the National Heart & Lung Institute
  2. General Adult Psychiatry – with clinical work at Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust, CNWL [for applicants with CCT in in older adult, forensic, general adult psychiatry – but must be discussed and agreed with clinical division and academic department], research hosted in Department of Brain Sciences
  3. Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery – for applicants with CCT in General Surgery, with clinical work to be agreed with Head of Department of Surgery and Cancer

The application process comprises 2 stages.

  • Stage 1: Speak to the relevant Imperial academic and NHS clinical departments to discuss your research and clinical interests and establish whether they are able to support your application. Get their formal approval and estimated research costings for the project. Closing date: Wednesday 18 February 2026
  • Stage 2: Submit your approved APPRF application proposal, together with your CV and completed Job application form. Closing date: Wednesday 25 February 2026
