Do you have great communication skills, a sharp eye for detail and a passion for events, marketing and social media? We are seeking a proactive, organised and creative individual to support the delivery of high-quality communications, engagement and marketing activities across the Department of Chemical Engineering. This varied role will contribute to the production of digital content, delivery of student, staff and external events, coordination of marketing activity, social media management, and day-to-day communications support.

The postholder will work closely with academic and professional services colleagues to ensure our messaging is clear, engaging and aligned with Imperial's values and brand. This is a busy and varied post requiring an enthusiastic and highly competent person able to multi-task and to work to deadlines. The post-holder must be proactive in their approach to their duties and be able to work with minimum supervision. The post will involve a high level of interaction with staff and students of all levels as well as, occasionally, visitors, and the post-holder must combine a professional approach with a friendly and welcoming manner. Occasional work out of core hours will be required, including for evening events.

What you would be doing

  • Communications
    • Support the creation and publication of content for internal and external channels, news stories, website updates, screens, social media posts, departmental templates and printed materials.
    • Lead on the production of the departmental digital newsletter, sourcing stories, updates and images.
    • Draft, proofread and edit communications in line with Imperial's house style and departmental tone.
    • Assist with maintaining the department's website and intranet, ensuring content is accurate, accessible and up to date.
  • Events
    • Assist in planning, coordinating and delivering both in-person and virtual departmental events such as lectures, workshops, open days, alumni receptions and student-facing activities.
    • Support on-site event delivery, including registration, IT setup, room setup, signage, photography coordination and guest liaison.
    • Help manage end-end event logistics, room bookings, supplier liaison, catering requests, attendee registration, promotional materials, signage and equipment setup.
    • Ensure event merchandise is boxed and delivered to internal/external locations, overseeing all end-to-end logistics ensuring deliveries arrive securely and on time.
  • Marketing
    • Support marketing activity to promote the department's programmes, research, enterprise initiatives and public engagement work.
    • Support the student community with publishing their work/activities, including proactively following their outputs and reaching out to promote.
    • Write copy for and monitor social media platforms (currently Instagram, X, BlueSky, LinkedIn, YouTube and Facebook) and other channels to engage internal and external partners.
    • Assist with producing promotional materials, digital campaigns, and student recruitment content.
  • General
    • Respond to routine enquiries and provide administrative support for communications, events and marketing activities.
    • Oversee the Communications inbox and disseminate information internally and externally via email or calendar invites.
    • Maintain and update mailing/contact lists, MS Planner, databases, content calendars and shared communications resources.
    • Attend internal/external communications meetings, including sitting on relevant committee meetings to aid decision making (i.e. Sustainability committee), and in some cases, deputising for the Communications Manager in their absence.

What we are looking for

  • Degree-educated or equivalent experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Experience or demonstrable interest in communications, events or marketing.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build positive working relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail, including proofreading and accuracy.
  • Strong skills in design or digital content creation, Microsoft Office, social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, X, BlueSky) and digital tools/platforms (CANVA).
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends to support events.
  • Flexible approach to working environments, with the ability to move between desks, spaces and (on occasion) campuses, to support team, departmental and Imperial activity.

Desirable

  • Experience working in a communications, events or marketing role.
  • Experience within higher education or a similar large, complex organisation.
  • Knowledge of photography, video editing or visual storytelling.

This is a part-time, open-ended post with a 0.6FTE (3 days a week). This post is advertised as on-site, with the option to undertake hybrid (one day a week) if and when business needs allow (ad hoc), in agreement with the Line Manager.
