Julia Anderson Public Engagement Trainee, Fleming Initiative

This role is part of the Julia Anderson Training Programme which provides individuals who are at the early stage of their career with hands-on experience working on projects or activities conducted by the Institute of Global Health Innovation (IGHI). Please see the full eligibility criteria before you apply. You must have no work experience, or less than two months of full-time or part-time equivalent experience, within the health, science, technology, or business management sectors, or in any office-based role. You must have the right to work in the UK and have not completed any number of internships (paid or unpaid) for two months or more (individually or cumulatively).

Are you interested in gaining experience in exhibition development, community engagement and science communications? Would you like to help make a meaningful impact in the fight against the growing global health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)? We are looking for a Public Engagement Trainee to work with the Fleming Initiative’s Public Engagement and Involvement team this summer, where you will develop a variety of skills that can help you pursue a career in communications and engagement in STEM fields.

What you would be doing

• You will be supporting the running of two public advisory groups, one with non-specialist members of the public across the UK and one with London-based young people.
• You will gain understanding of the Fleming Initiative’s work through an engagement and involvement lens, and you will be able to combine such insights with creativity to help design new ways of engaging the public with AMR.
• Your experience with both groups will build foundations for your understanding of the Fleming Initiative’s work, driving your creativity to design ways to engage the public on the hidden global health crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
• You’ll be researching and sharing ideas and concepts for the upcoming Fleming Centre exhibition, which aims to connect scientific innovation with the public, and to create space for informal learning, sharing knowledge, and getting involved in research.
• You will also be developing content to showcase the Fleming Initiative’s portfolio through our digital channels, giving you the chance to experience the full breadth of communications and engagement in a cross-disciplinary initiative driving impactful work.

What we are looking for

This role will be within a fast-paced team with set deadlines to enable delivery of the Fleming Initiative’s ambitions, particularly around the development of the Fleming Centre. You will need to be proactive and adaptable to be able to thrive in this environment.

You do not need to have any prior experience or existing knowledge of science, AMR or communications and engagement for this role. However, an interest in any of these areas would be useful.

As the role will include reading through some complex scientific content, you should have some confidence in translating potentially challenging materials into accessible plain English, and in using Microsoft Word and other Microsoft Office suite software (or similar).

This post is offered on a full time and fixed-term basis for 12 weeks with a start date of 1st July 2026.
