Job Description:
Applications are invited for prestigious Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Fellowships, a program of Schmidt Sciences, commencing 1 September 2026. There are up to 8 positions available, with a duration of 2 years.
The Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Fellows will produce independent and original research, using AI to advance science within their host department and the I-X Centre for AI in Science. These fellowships aim to identify excellent researchers and accelerate their use of AI to advance and disrupt Science or Engineering. \’AI\’ is interpreted broadly, including topics in Bayesian Inference and Robotics; \’Science\’ covers Natural Science and Engineering fields (excluding clinical medical themes and medical imaging). Examples include Bayesian optimization for molecular or materials design; machine learning for single cell data; physics-based ML for turbine design and astrostatistics. Candidates should aim to substantially advance a specific area of science, either as AI researchers tackling scientific problems or science researchers using AI as a tool. Extensive AI knowledge is not required; training will be provided.
Candidates will:
- Hold, or be near completion of, a PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline.
- Demonstrate potential for leadership qualities in their field.
- Have an outstanding research record, evidenced by thesis, publications, presentations, code, etc.
- Propose research within the AI in Science remit and possess relevant skills.
Fellows will join the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Network of researchers, participate in tailored training, and receive career development support. The program offers flexibility and independence, with mentorship from faculty of their choice.
Additional support is available for women in AI in Science, including career development funds and a community of women researchers. At least one candidate will be appointed through this route.
This is a full-time, fixed-term 2-year position based at White City Campus.
Applicants without an official PhD will be appointed as Research Assistants.
Opportunities for more experienced researchers are available. Applicants interested in 4-year roles should apply for the Imperial College Research Fellowships, supported by Schmidt Sciences. Other fellowship roles at Research Associate and Research Fellow levels can be found online.
