Job Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering for an Electronics and Electro-Mechanical Technician based in the Department’s Geotechnical Engineering laboratory.

The post holder will be responsible for designing and delivering electronic and mechanical services associated with testing apparatus and rigs for research and teaching.

They will also provide general technical support across the Department.

This is a full-time, open-ended position.

You will lead in providing electronic/electro-mechanical support within the Geotechnical laboratories, including designing apparatus, using specialist machines to develop new techniques, and manufacturing electronic circuits and instruments.

With a strong understanding of equipment and materials safety, you will monitor laboratory users to ensure Health and Safety standards are maintained.

Your role will include designing, constructing, assembling, and installing specialist apparatus for hydro-mechanical and thermal soil testing.

In collaboration with technical, academic, and research staff, you will support the management of the physical infrastructure in the Geotechnical workshop and laboratories.

  • An HNC/HND (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related field is required, along with a recognized apprenticeship in Electronics or Electrical Engineering. A degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering is desirable.
  • You should have experience working in an electro/mechanical workshop and be confident with microcomputers and software.
  • You should have substantial experience with electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, and signal generators, and demonstrate initiative, innovation, and idea development.
  • You must effectively manage your workload and work collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to work from engineering drawings and instructions is essential.
