Job Summary
You will be responsible for the development and implementation of pre-sessional and transition support for students from widening participation backgrounds as part of the university’s commitments in its Access and Participation Plan (APP). This will include project management of a residential programme for confirmed students at the pre-enrolment stage to support transition into the university and the development of wraparound provision to support widening participation students in preparation for and during their time at the university. These activities will also include developing resources and support provision for members of staff from across the University who engage with students from widening participation backgrounds, for example, personal tutors.
You are expected to bring experience of supporting students from historically under-represented backgrounds throughout their time at university, particularly at transition points between levels of study. You will work closely with the Education Projects Manager and the Head of Education and Student Experience Strategy Projects, as well as a range of staff and students from across the University.
You will be expected to develop positive working relationships with a broad range of individuals and work effectively across teams. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Experience of working in higher education, with an interest in social mobility, learning, teaching, and the student experience is required, and ideally, you will have experience of working in a project support role.
Essential requirements
- Educated to degree level or equivalent.
- Experience of working within higher education, with a sound knowledge and understanding of the student experience and the academic environment.
- Experience of running residential events for young people.
- Experience of working to support the widening access and participation agenda, ideally within a HE setting.
- Understanding of the challenges and support needs of historically under-represented students during their HE studies, particularly at transition points.
- Ability to work independently and manage own workload to tight deadlines with little direct supervision.
- Numerate with the proven ability to understand, interpret, and explain complicated information and data (including financial data).
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain good working relationships with a wide range of people at all levels of seniority.
