Salary range:
Assistant Professor: £70,718 to £80,148 per annum
Associate Professor: Minimum starting salary of £82,969 per annum

About the role

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial is growing and invites applications from outstanding individuals to join our academic staff at the Assistant and Associate Professor levels and establish an ambitious and world-leading research programme. Two positions are available.

We are open to multiple research areas in chemical engineering/related fields and prioritise research innovation and promise of the candidate’s work. We particularly encourage candidates interested in catalysis & reaction engineering and polymers, interfaces & colloidal science.

What you would be doing

Research

  • Direct, lead, or contribute to a research area at the highest scientifically rigorous levels.
  • Develop a broad range of research within the department.
  • Supervise, train and mentor research staff and students.
  • Manage research projects.
  • Obtain funds and research grants.
  • Publish high quality research in peer reviewed journals.
  • Attend and present work at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate and strengthen links with colleagues within the Department of Chemical Engineering and external partners.
  • Play a role in the national and international research community and/or learned societies.

Education

  • Teach at all levels – undergraduate, masters and higher research degrees – through lectures, seminars, practicals.
  • Examine courses at all levels – undergraduate, masters and higher research degrees – exam setting, coursework setting, marking and viva style examinations.
  • Mentor students of all levels, undergraduate, masters and higher research degrees through personal tutorials, and supervision.
  • Provide pastoral support for students.
  • Plan and review own approach to teaching.
  • Take a leading role in, or contribute to, curriculum development.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of teaching within the field.
  • Work with national bodies on curriculum development and quality assurance.

Contribution to the running of the Department and Imperial

  • Participate in the planning and objective setting process for the Department and campus.
  • Show initiative in managing your individual performance and academic group.
  • Contribute to the leadership of academic teams, the department, Faculty, College, and national/international initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the department and other parts of Imperial.
  • Attend relevant academic or management committees.

What we are looking for

Essential requirements

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A proven track record in conducting high quality independent research.
  • Experience of training undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Experience of preparing grant applications for submission.
  • An ability to convey ideas and concepts clearly and effectively to a range of audiences.
  • An ability to raise significant research funding from a variety of sources.
  • A strong dedication to teaching and student supervision and mentoring.
  • A willingness to engage in collaborative research.
