About this Role
The Strategic Investment Fund is seeking an Associate focused on Sub-Saharan Africa to drive expansion of the investment portfolio through thesis formation, deal origination, investment execution, and portfolio management activities. This full-time position is based at the foundation’s London office, with opportunities to work across other geographies. The role reports to the Director of Program Related Investments. The Associate will work at the intersection of the foundation’s philanthropic strategy and commercial investment activities, collaborating closely with program teams to identify investment opportunities that align with the foundation’s impact objectives. This position requires both financial acumen and a deep commitment to understanding the development landscape across Sub-Saharan Africa, including the ability to build and maintain relationships with entrepreneurs, investors, and foundation partners. The role involves end-to-end investment management responsibilities, from initial opportunity identification through ongoing portfolio monitoring and impact tracking. The successful candidate will be comfortable navigating complex investment structures, managing multiple stakeholders, and communicating investment rationale and performance to senior leadership and governance bodies.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with foundation program strategy teams to understand their impact objectives and partner with technical colleagues to form investment theses
- Source potential investments in Sub-Saharan Africa through active outreach and relationship-building within entrepreneurial and investment communities
- Perform initial evaluation of investment opportunities and participate in shaping conversations with prospective companies
- Determine appropriate investment structuring for each opportunity
- Lead due diligence processes and conduct financial modeling for potential investments
- Negotiate definitive legal documentation as part of deal execution teams
- Present investment recommendations to the foundation’s Investment Committee
- Participate in all aspects of portfolio management, including facilitating interactions between portfolio companies and foundation program teams
- Serve as an observer to portfolio company boards of directors when appropriate
- Proactively identify and mitigate key strategic, financial, and legal opportunities and issues across the portfolio
- Ensure the Investment Committee and leadership are regularly informed on impact and financial performance of portfolio investments
- Maintain high-quality interactions and provide clear, consistent communications with internal and external stakeholders
Requirements
- Previous experience as an Analyst, Associate, or Principal at a venture capital firm, growth equity fund, leveraged buy-out fund, investment bank, or strategy consulting firm
- Meaningful experience identifying and assessing investment opportunities
- Strong capability in conducting commercial and financial due diligence
- Experience supporting transaction execution and investment closing processes
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with founders, management teams, and C-level executives
- Strong interest in principal investing and impact investing methodologies
- Intellectual curiosity and sound commercial judgment
- Genuine commitment to advancing innovative and scalable approaches to social impact
- Comfort operating in a wide range of cultural, geographic, and operational situations
- Demonstrated culturally sensitive behavior when working with diverse populations
- Deep commitment to development issues and understanding of global development challenges
