Apprenticeship Type – Level 5 Early Years Lead Practitioner
Salary - £29,120 - £31,200 per annum
Hours – 40 Hours per week. Monday to Friday shift pattern between 7.30am-6.15pm. 8 hour days
Job Overview – This Level 5 apprenticeship training programme will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours of early years practitioners to be proactive and influential. The learner will have exposure working in a senior role such as a Room Leader or Deputy Room Leader. Undertaking this apprenticeship will develop the practitioner’s ability to reflect and build on practice through ongoing professional enquiry and action-led research.
Key Duties – An Early Years Lead Practitioner (EYLP) apprentice is a more advanced childcare role (usually Level 5) where you:
- Help lead practice in a nursery or early years setting
- Support children’s learning, development, and wellbeing (0–8 years)
- Work alongside staff and sometimes guide less experienced practitioners
Daily tasks (example) Your day might involve:
- Running group activities (story time, outdoor play, crafts)
- Monitoring children’s progress and updating records
- Supporting routines (meals, hygiene, naps)
- Leading part of the room or curriculum area
- Communicating with parents at drop-off/pick-up
Key responsibilities – Typical duties include:
- Planning and leading learning activities (play-based learning)
- Supporting children’s communication and language, physical development, social and emotional skills
- Observing and assessing children’s progress
- Creating a safe, inclusive environment
- Working with parents, carers, and professionals
- Supporting and mentoring other staff members
Compared to lower-level apprenticeships, EYLPs take more responsibility and leadership.
Training & qualification - Usually a Level 5 apprenticeship takes around 21 months and includes:
- On-the-job experience
- Coursework and assessments
