The Insight Analyst will work closely with our Product teams to deliver customer and commercial insights that improve product decisions and business performance. The role will use customer, product and transactional data held in a SQL database to understand what customers buy, how different products perform, and the commercial opportunities behind those patterns.
Combining strong commercial awareness with rigorous analysis, you will explain the drivers of product and customer performance, identify opportunities across ranges and customer groups, and turn findings into clear, practical recommendations. Success in this role means going beyond reporting what happened to explaining why it matters and what the business should do next.
Who you are:
- You have strong commercial awareness and understand how product performance, customer demand, sales, margin and promotional activity affect retail results.
- You are naturally curious about products and customers, and can connect analytical findings to trading decisions and commercial opportunities.
- You are confident using SQL to investigate large, complex datasets, with a disciplined approach to accuracy and validation.
- You can turn detailed analysis into clear, persuasive stories and actionable recommendations for Product and other commercial stakeholders.
- You are collaborative, proactive and organised, comfortable owning an analysis from the initial question to the presentation of findings.
What you’ll be doing:
- Partner closely with Product teams to understand their commercial questions, agree success measures and deliver insight that supports product and range decisions.
- Use SQL to extract, join and analyse customer, product and transactional data from the company’s SQL database.
- Analyse product performance through a customer lens, including who buys different products, purchasing patterns, repeat purchase and differences across customer segments.
- Investigate sales, demand, product mix, customer value and promotional response to identify the drivers of commercial performance and opportunities for improvement.
- Carry out ad hoc deep dives into product and customer performance, testing hypotheses and challenging assumptions with evidence.
- Translate complex findings into concise presentations, visualisations and commercially relevant recommendations for Product, Trading and Marketing stakeholders.
- Validate data, document analytical definitions and apply consistent methods to ensure insight is accurate, reproducible and trusted.
- Use Excel and, where appropriate, data visualisation tools to explore and communicate analytical findings.
What you’ll need:
- Strong commercial awareness is essential, with a clear understanding of retail product performance, customer demand and the factors influencing sales and profitability.
- Experience in an insight or data analyst role, ideally in retail, eCommerce or another consumer-focused business.
- Strong SQL skills, including joining, aggregating and validating large customer and transactional datasets.
- Ability to connect customer behaviour and product-level analysis to meaningful commercial recommendations.
- Advanced Excel skills for data manipulation, analysis and presentation.
- Excellent communication and data storytelling skills, including confidence presenting findings to non-technical commercial stakeholders.
- Strong analytical curiosity, attention to detail and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities independently.
- Experience with Power BI or other visualisation tools is advantageous.
- Experience in customer segmentation, cohort analysis, product analytics or campaign measurement is advantageous.
