At IMI, we’re not just creating solutions; we’re building careers. So, unlock your potential: do work that matters, grow with us, and be part of a team shaping tomorrow. Here, you can make a real difference - solving complex engineering challenges that make industries smarter, safer and more sustainable.
This role is part of IMI Worthing (Applied Kilovolts), a leader in high stability, low noise high voltage power supplies, serving mass spectrometry, medical, and industrial sectors. We pride ourselves on delivering uncompromising quality, ultra-responsive service, and transparent project management.
Role Overview
As Engineering Manager, you will lead the engineering team at IMI Worthing to deliver predictable, high‑quality new product introduction (NPI) and sustaining engineering outcomes for high‑voltage power supplies used in life‑science and analytical instrumentation applications. This is a people‑centred leadership role combined with technical delivery responsibility. You will build capability, develop a high‑performance culture, and ensure there is a clear, executable path from concept through to production.
You will work in close partnership with the Technology Strategy Manager, who owns technical strategy and architecture, and collaborate with Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Commercial teams to ensure customer and business needs are translated into robust, deliverable engineering solutions. This role offers the opportunity to shape both how we engineer and how we lead engineering at site level.
Work Environment
This role is on‑site, based at IMI Worthing in Goring‑by‑Sea. You will work closely with cross‑functional teams locally, while also engaging with central IMI stakeholders and customers as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering leadership and capability: Lead, coach and develop the engineering team, including performance management, capability building, succession planning and recruitment. Create a culture of ownership, collaboration, learning and strong engineering discipline. Establish and maintain effective ways of working, including design reviews, documentation standards, verification readiness and change control.
- NPI delivery and governance: Own end‑to‑end NPI execution from requirements capture through design, verification and validation, industrialisation and product launch. Lead delivery cadence and governance, including planning, stage‑gate reviews, risk management and resource allocation. Ensure manufacturability, testability and serviceability are embedded early through close collaboration with Manufacturing, Test and Quality.
- Customer and commercial collaboration: Partner with Commercial and Sales teams and, where appropriate, customers to translate voice‑of‑customer inputs into clear technical requirements and priorities. Present credible delivery plans, including risks, mitigations and trade‑offs across performance, cost and schedule. Build confidence through clear communication and technically grounded decision‑making.
- Technical leadership: Provide day‑to‑day technical leadership to unblock teams and support sound engineering decisions. Guide analysis and decisions around analogue electronics, control loops, power‑supply stability and system trade‑offs. Escalate architecture‑defining decisions appropriately and ensure execution aligns with agreed technical direction.
- Sustaining engineering and lifecycle management: Lead engineering response to field issues, obsolescence, cost‑reduction and continuous improvement activities. Drive effective root‑cause analysis, corrective actions and documentation.
