The Position

As part of our commitment to responsible mining and continuous improvement, we are strengthening our global mining engineering capability. We are now seeking an experienced Mining Engineer – Geotechnical to provide group‑wide guidance, governance and technical leadership across our international mining operations.

The Role: This is a senior technical role within the Corporate Mining & Resource Planning (MRP) team, providing geotechnical engineering leadership and support across Imerys’ worldwide mining portfolio. Reporting to the Mining & Resource Planning VP – Group, you will act as a subject matter expert on geotechnical aspects of mining, supporting mine managers and mining engineers to operate safely, efficiently and in line with recognised best practice. You will contribute to mine design, planning, safety and continuous improvement initiatives, while also supporting specific mining projects as required. The role is full‑time and can be based in the UK or Europe, either home‑based or office‑based, with flexibility to suit business needs. Global travel is an integral part of the position, with up to 50% travel and occasional extended site‑based assignments.

You will be equally comfortable:

  • Providing clear technical guidance to operations teams
  • Working alongside sites to improve safety and ground control
  • Reviewing and applying geotechnical and mining software outputs
  • Presenting complex technical subjects to both technical and non‑technical audiences
  • Playing a leadership role in global improvement initiatives
  • Managing geotechnical consultants and contracts

This is a role for a geotechnical mining engineer who combines strong technical expertise with the ability to influence, educate and support teams across a global organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide group‑wide guidance and governance on geotechnical engineering across all Imerys mining operations
  • Support mine design, mine planning and geotechnical aspects of mining projects
  • Advise on ground control and slope stability for mining excavations, waste stockpiles, tailings impoundments and stockpiles
  • Support the design and operation of tailings and waste facilities, promoting best practice
  • Contribute to mine phasing options, permitting studies and environmental impact assessments
  • Support the appropriate use of geotechnical modelling, stress modelling and slope stability software
  • Provide guidance on groundwater control and its impact on slope stability
  • Act as a role model for safety and contribute to improving safety performance across Imerys mines
  • Lead or contribute to safety‑focused webinars and technical knowledge sharing
  • Participate in mine safety audits and review programmes
  • Increase global awareness and understanding of geotechnical risks in both hard rock and soil environments
  • Play a leadership role in the deployment of the Imerys continuous improvement programme (I‑Cube) within mining
  • Assess site maturity, identify improvement opportunities and help develop and implement action plans
  • Manage or support mine engineering‑related projects, including supervision of other team members when required

Profile: You are an experienced mining professional with a strong geotechnical engineering background and a passion for improving safety and operational performance. You will have:

  • A Mining Engineering degree with geotechnical‑related qualifications
  • 5+ years’ mining experience (ideally 8+), including at least 2 years in site‑based roles
  • Demonstrated experience in influencing improvements in safety and ground control
  • Familiarity with mining and geotechnical software such as Surpac, Deswik, RPM, Whittle, RocScience, FLAC or similar tools
  • Strong IT and reporting skills using Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office
  • The ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly to diverse audiences and across management levels

You are results‑oriented, analytical and ethical in your approach. You work autonomously while collaborating effectively as part of a global team, and you are comfortable engaging with culturally diverse stakeholders across multiple regions.
