Imaged Reality develops Stratbox, a digital platform that helps geoscientists, engineers, researchers and technical teams reduce subsurface uncertainty by integrating core images, logs, laboratory data, thin sections, outcrop data and AI-assisted interpretation workflows. Our products are used across energy, mining, academia and subsurface research. We are now evolving Stratbox Core Explorer into a more powerful, intuitive and scalable platform for interpreting core data, connecting rock observations to analytical data, and enabling AI-assisted workflows for domain experts.
We are looking for a Senior UX/UI Designer who can help us rethink and improve the user experience of a complex, data-rich technical product.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced UX/UI designer to lead the redesign and improvement of key workflows in Stratbox Core Explorer, a B2B SaaS platform for visualising, interpreting and analysing well core data. This is not a simple web design project. The product combines high-resolution core imagery, depth-based navigation, geoscience logs, analytical datasets, charts, annotations, metadata, machine-learning outputs and collaboration workflows. You will work closely with the founder, product team, developers and domain experts to simplify complex technical workflows and create a modern, intuitive and scalable user experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Review the current Stratbox Core Explorer user experience and identify usability issues.
- Redesign key workflows including data import, depth navigation, core image viewing, log visualisation, annotations, data QC, interpretation and AI-assisted analysis.
- Create user journeys, wireframes, high-fidelity UI screens and clickable Figma prototypes.
- Design interfaces for data-heavy scientific workflows involving imagery, tables, charts, logs and spatial/depth-based data.
- Develop or refine a design system for reusable UI components.
- Work with developers to ensure designs are technically feasible and clearly documented.
- Support usability testing with technical users, including geologists, petrophysicists, researchers and data scientists.
- Help define UX patterns for AI-assisted workflows, including labelling, model training, prediction review, QC and retraining.
- Improve the overall product experience while preserving the scientific and technical rigour required by expert users.
Ideal Experience
- Experience in one or more of the following: Complex B2B SaaS products, Enterprise software, Data-heavy platforms, Scientific, technical, engineering or geospatial applications, Dashboards, analytics tools or workflow-based applications, AI-assisted or ML-enabled product workflows.
- Experience in geoscience, energy, mining, engineering, GIS, subsurface, scientific software or industrial data platforms would be highly valuable, but is not essential if you are strong at understanding complex domains.
Required Skills
- Strong UX thinking for complex workflows.
- Excellent UI design skills.
- Advanced Figma skills.
- Ability to create wireframes, prototypes and production-ready UI designs.
- Experience designing for desktop or web-based applications.
- Strong information architecture and interaction design skills.
- Ability to work with technical subject matter experts.
- Ability to simplify complexity without oversimplifying expert workflows.
- Clear communication and documentation for development teams.
- Comfortable working in an iterative startup/product environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience with geoscience, subsurface, GIS, energy, mining or scientific data products.
- Experience designing AI/ML-enabled workflows.
- Experience with Unity, web apps or hybrid desktop/web applications.
- Experience with enterprise SaaS, permissions, collaboration and auditability.
- Experience designing tools for expert technical users.
- Experience working with remote development teams.
- Familiarity with data visualisation and analytical workflows.
Initial Project Scope
The first engagement is expected to be a focused UX/UI sprint, including:
- UX audit of the current product.
- Review of 4–6 critical workflows.
- Redesign of selected high-value screens.
- Clickable Figma prototype.
- Initial design system/component library.
- Developer handoff notes.
- Recommendations for future product UX improvements.
Examples of workflows may include:
- Loading and organising core image datasets.
- Navigating core images by depth.
- Comparing core images with logs and analytical data.
- Creating and editing interpretations.
- Reviewing AI-generated predictions.
- QC of labelled data and model outputs.
- Exporting or sharing interpretations.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for a designer who is:
- Strategic but hands-on.
- Comfortable with ambiguity.
- Strong at structuring complex information.
- Able to work with expert technical users.
- Curious about scientific and geoscience workflows.
- Detail-oriented in UI execution.
- Practical and delivery-focused.
- Able to challenge assumptions constructively.
Application Requirements
Please send:
- Portfolio or selected case studies.
- Examples of complex B2B, enterprise, data-heavy or technical products.
- Brief explanation of your role in each project.
- Availability.
- Day rate or project-based pricing.
Applications with only marketing websites, e-commerce design or simple mobile apps are unlikely to be a strong fit unless they also include complex product UX examples.
Suggested Screening Task
Shortlisted candidates may be asked to review one Stratbox Core Explorer workflow and propose a high-level UX improvement approach. This would be used to assess problem-solving style, not to request unpaid production work.
