Technical Director – Building Safety
iM2 is a Building Safety Consultancy that provides expert guidance on The Construction Design & Management Regulations 2015 and Building Safety Act 2022. We assist our clients in navigating the regulatory landscape associated with safety compliance in the built environment, acting as the principal designer under both CDM and BSA, conducting compliance reviews, and offering tailored training programs. Our team is composed of seasoned professionals, including former building control officers (RBI’s) and health and safety experts, all of whom have a proven track record in delivering significant projects across the UK.

Summary
You will collaborate with our expert team to provide clients with comprehensive advice on building safety and the guidance on the Building Safety Act. The position demands an acute understanding of building regulations and the associated safety legislation. You could be responsible for advising clients on higher‑risk buildings (HRBs) among others and performing the principal designer role under The Building Safety Act/Building Regulations across various projects. Candidates must have at least 5 years of experience in building control. You will need to be adept at working with a variety of stakeholders, including clients and design teams, providing clear guidance on their obligations under the building regulations and Building Safety Act. A proactive communicator with a good range of organisational skills. The ability to work independently and as part of our team is essential.
This role is based on a \’working from home\’ arrangement; all locations are considered.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Building Regulations Expertise: Provide clients with expert advice on the requirements and implications of the building regulations.
- Building Safety Act Guidance: Offer informed advice on the Building Safety Act 2022, ensuring client compliance.
- Principal Designer Role: Confidently assume the principal designer role under building regulations, which may include HRB\’s. (extending to PD \’advisor\’)
- Design Risk Management: Conduct thorough risk assessments for potential hazards, including fire and structural failures, and develop effective mitigation strategies.
- Review and assess proposed building plans.
- Prepare reports and correspondence.
- Provide professional advice on‑site to builders, developers, designers on various building projects.
- Conduct inspections of building works to ensure compliance with the building regulations.
Qualifications
- Degree in Building Surveying, Building Control, or a closely related discipline.
- Professional qualification at Member level with CABE, RICS, or a similar organisation.
- Experience in Building Control.
- Class 2D – Class 3H registered building inspector or in the process of registering with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR). (Desirable with support to enhance/provide)
- Proven experience in construction projects.
Knowledge
- Legislation Expertise: In‑depth knowledge of the Building Act, Building Regulations, Fire Safety Act and related legal frameworks.
- Structural Design Acumen: Proficiency in assessing structural risks, identifying hazards, and understanding design principles.
- Fire Safety Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of fire behaviour and its integration into building design.
- Construction and Sustainability: Familiarity with modern construction techniques, sustainability practices, and material testing for both new and existing structures.
- Awareness/understanding of the RIBA Staged Framework.
