Nurse Functional Assessor – Southampton (Hybrid)
Salary: £40,000 to £42,000 per year plus bonus
Monday to Friday, office hours (no nights or weekends)
Full-time and part-time roles available

About the role
This role is ideal for Nurses looking to move away from shift work into a more structured and predictable working environment.
We are recruiting registered Nurses (RGN, RMN and RNLD) to work as Functional Assessors delivering Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Work Capability Assessment (WCA) services.
This role offers an alternative to hands‑on clinical work. The focus is on assessing how health conditions impact daily living or work capability and producing clear, evidence‑based reports.
Key details
Location: Southampton assessment centre
Working pattern: Monday to Friday, office hours only
Hybrid working: Combination of home working and office‑based assessments
Training
All roles require completion of a full‑time training programme. This is a minimum of 9 weeks but may be longer depending on individual progress or any periods of absence.
The role
You will carry out structured functional assessments within PIP or WCA services, depending on service allocation, focusing on how an individual’s health conditions affect their daily living or ability to work.
Assessments are completed via:
- Telephone
- Video consultation
- Face‑to‑face appointments (non‑clinical setting)
All appointments are pre-booked and follow a structured format.
Responsibilities
- Carry out structured assessments using clinical judgement
- Review medical evidence and supporting documentation
- Produce clear, objective written reports
- Communicate professionally and sensitively throughout
This role does not involve
- Providing hands‑on clinical care
- Diagnosing conditions
- Prescribing or delivering treatment
- Making decisions on benefit entitlement
- Working nights, weekends or shifts
Skills, experience and qualifications required
- Registered healthcare professional (NMC, HCPC or GPhC) with a valid UK registration
- Minimum of 1 year post-registration clinical experience
- Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured reports
- Good verbal communication and active listening skills to gather accurate information
- Ability to review medical evidence and apply clinical judgement in a fair and objective way
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy in documentation
- Confident using IT systems and basic computer applications
- Ability to manage workload and work to quality standards and timelines
- Professional and empathetic approach when working with individuals with a range of health conditions
- Ability to follow structured processes and guidelines
Desirable
Previous report writing experience would be beneficial but is not essential, as full training is provided
